Description
Benji was purchased originally but after a year or so, his family had a baby and then kept him in a crate until they surrendered him; about 8 months. Benji is a good looking 2 yr old tricolor beagle. He gets along with dogs, we do not know about cats but no children. He gets along with children, but Benji has resource guarding. I would not trust him around children for that reason. Children are not equipped to handle that. Resource guarding is when a dog has an object, it could be a toy, or a treat, or even a napkin, whatever the item is, they growl and snarl when you come near them or try to take it away. You have to usually trade these dogs something else of value so they give up the item. If you continue to try and take it, they might bite you. If it is not something you need to take away, then steer clear from him during these times. Benji also has fear aggression. So new places and people scare him, that he reacts and again, growls, snarls and snaps. I have found this is short term. When he first came and his owners left, he turned on me and I could not get near him. I left him alone for the day, meaning he was here and could be with the dogs and do whatever, but I did not go near him. By the next day, he wanted to be near me. I was able to cut his nails and easily pet and touch him. He had a similar reaction at the vet office, but it was manageable now that I knew he had that. Benji is a great dog who loves attention and to play but he does need someone who is either experienced or willing to be patient when he is guarding or afraid. Adoption fee is $300 which helps cover all of the medical for all of the dogs in the rescue. All dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped and many have received further treatment for such conditions as lump removal, severe ear infections, dental cleanings, bloodwork, leg injuries, etc.. We do out of state adoptions but require a submitted application, a home visit (sometimes we cannot get this done and then we can not adopt), and the adopter must come to Las Vegas to meet the potential dog(s), possibly adopt, and then drive the dog back. Disclaimer: The SNBRF has the right to deny applications based on our adoption policies established for the consideration of the health, safety, and well-being of the dog. Beagles can have a lifespan of 15-18 years. Therefore, beagles or any other breed who are under 3 years of age will NOT be adopted to anyone over the age of 62. For individuals who are 70 years of age and older, the dogs must be 8 years or older
