Description
Opal is a very special 8 year old Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix, she only weighs about 12 pounds. Our rescue girls were at a pet fair with the girls from the animal shelter. One of them mentioned a Chihuahua that was dumped there, she was terrified and unfortunately was trying to bite everyone if they came close to her. The shelter does not have the ability to rehab or give medical attention to every animal so if they are un adoptable they will have to be euthanized. Of course we always like a challenge so we asked our trainer to go over and evaluate her. She was able to get her out of the kennel and pet her with caution. She did feel that we would be able to help her so we pulled her from the shelter on September 14. We immediately brought her to the vets office to be looked over. While she was here she did try to bite everyone but once she was evaluated by the vet we all understood why. Poor Opal had horrible teeth, her breath was bad and her teeth were rotten. Although that wasn't why she was trying to bite everyone. Opal who is a very small dog had 3 large strawberry sized bladder stones in her tiny little bladder. Can you imagine how much pain she was in.?? She could barely urinate and when she did it was excruciating. Luckily we have an amazing foster that is our Chihuahua angel. She rushed right over to the vets and picked Opal up. Opal's surgery was scheduled for Monday so our foster and her son spoiled her over the weekend as best they could. What a difference her behavior was after the surgery. She said after she healed she was feeling so good that she was hopping like a bunny out in the fenced yard. Next step was to take care of her teeth. Opal went for her dental on October 23, the result from that was having 18 teeth pulled out. This poor girl had such a horrible life before we got her and for the first time she is feeling better and feeling loved. She is now ready for her forever home. Opal is great with other dogs and would love to have at least 1 other dog in her new home. She is obsessed with the foster mom's adult son so she is great with men and does well with older kids.
