Description

Meet Bowser!  15-pound Shih Tzu | Professional Couch Parrot | Occasional Happy Spinner Named after the Mario villain, Bowser is the ultimate boss and definitely has a little of that grumpy turtle energy! What's a Shih Tzu without a little bossiness and sass? But underneath that tough little exterior is a dog with a whole lot of love to give.  Bowser has had a rough start in life, so he takes a little time to trust new people. He needs someone who will be patient, respect his boundaries, get down on his level, and let him come around at his own pace. But once he decides he likes you, you're his best friend, and he'll want to follow you everywhere! Bowser's signature moves: Being a Couch Parrot! Bowser loves perching on the back of the couch, preferably right behind your head, where he can snuggle in and occasionally surprise you with some kisses. He also loves a good round of scritches, especially belly rubs! He'll even paw at your hand to remind you that the belly-rubbing service is currently accepting appointments. Happy Spinning! When he's really happy, don't be surprised if he breaks out into joyful little spins! It's hard not to smile when Bowser's happy dance makes an appearance. Master of Surveillance! Bowser will start up his own neighborhood watch program by keeping an eye on everything happening outside the windows. And when he's out patrolling the neighborhood, he'll be sure to scare off those pesky squirrels! Professional Stink Seeker! Bowser is definitely a boy's boy who enjoys rolling around on his back in something particularly smelly. If there's something questionable to roll in, he's probably interested! Bully Stick Connoisseur! He loves a good chew almost as much as the real Bowser covets Princess Peach. Once finished, he must find the perfect hiding spot so the other dogs don't discover his treasure, each level harder than the one before! Bowser currently lives with other large dogs and can coexist with them, but he's not looking for a canine playmate just yet. He prefers his personal space and may remind other dogs to keep their distance. He can also get a little possessive of his favorite human and try to keep other dogs from getting attention, so a home with other dogs will need to be prepared to work patiently with him on sharing his people. He previously lived peacefully with another Shih Tzu, so we can't help but wonder if smaller canine companions might be more his speed. Slow introductions and thoughtful management will be important. Bowser hasn't shown much interest in toys just yet, but we have a feeling that side of his personality may come out as he gets more comfortable and settled. He's still working on his potty-training skills and making progress with a consistent schedule. No small bladders here, Bowser can hold it in a long time if he wants to, even when given the opportunity to go outside. He does well in his crate overnight, although he'll let you know he's not thrilled about being separated with some good old-fashioned whining. He's generally not much of a barker unless something scares him. He's also done great on his one car ride so far! The great outdoors seems a little new to him, but he's getting the chance to explore it at his own pace. Bowser will need a good grooming to help him feel his best, as his coat has some matting that needs attention. He'll also need a home that understands he can become frightened if cornered and may react defensively when he feels trapped. Giving him space, allowing him to approach on his own terms, and never forcing interactions will be key to helping him feel safe. Children: Bowser has not been introduced to children, so we don't know how he would do in a home with them. Given his tendency to react defensively when frightened, we think he may do best in an adult-only home or one with older, respectful children who understand the importance of giving him space and allowing him to approach on his own terms. Bowser is looking for a patient, understanding person who can see past his defenses and give him the time he needs to feel secure. He may not be the kind of dog who instantly trusts everyone he meets, but there's a sweet, silly, affectionate little companion in there waiting to blossom. If you've got room on the top of your couch (and don't mind sharing your pillow space with a 15-pound parrot), Bowser might just be your guy!  Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue.
