Description
This sweet 8-year-old beagle is looking for a special home with someone who understands deaf dogs and is willing to give him the time and patience he needs to build trust. Because he is deaf and hasn't had much socialization, he can be fearful of unfamiliar people and situations. He startles easily and may snap at people or other dogs if approached unexpectedly or if he feels uncomfortable. In the week I've had him, I have not seen him bite. His snapping appears to be his way of communicating that he's frightened or needs space. I don't believe he's a mean dog. I believe he's a dog who hasn't had the opportunity to learn that the world can be a safe place. He's been with me for just one week, and we're already seeing progress. At first, he wasn't comfortable being touched. Now he lets me pet him and even kiss him on top of his sweet little head. We've also discovered he loves helping with the dishwasher! Every time I open it, there he is. If I turn my back for even a second, he's right up on the door, supervising the entire operation. Apparently, he takes his kitchen duties very seriously! He's fully vetted, healthy, and knows how to use a doggy door. We're still working on house training, but he's improving every day. His ideal adopter will be someone experienced with fearful or reactive dogs who understands that trust takes time. A quiet, predictable home with people who can recognize his body language, avoid startling him, and respect his need for space would be best. Introductions to new people and other animals should be slow and carefully managed. At eight years old, he deserves a home where he can finally feel safe, loved, and understood. One week ago, he wasn't sure he could trust me. Today, he lets me kiss his head. Imagine what a little more time, patience, and love could do. He's not looking for perfection. He's just looking for someone who will give him a chance.Cassius is heartworm positive and needs to go through treatment but can be adopted in the Tampa Bay Area currently so that he has access to our vet.
