Description

Meet Zoe, the biggest and most gorgeous kitty ever! When Zoe arrived at Orange County Animal Shelter back in May, she weighed a whopping 23 lbs...that's more than double the weight of a healthy adult cat!  Zoe was surrendered by her owners of twelve years, because she did not approve of the new baby in the house. At the shelter, she was understandably stressed, and was lashing out. No one could even touch her, and even approaching her cage made Zoe hiss and swat. Then, she came down with an upper respiratory infection (a kitty cold), which only added to her misery. We knew she wouldn't improve in the shelter environment, so Zoe came to foster care to recover emotionally from losing her home, get over her cold, and to lose some weight.  It took a few weeks for Zoe to get comfortable enough to allow her foster mom to pet her, but once she did, she loved being petted. What she craves most (beside treats) is being brushed! It is one of favorite things, and she will purrr and rub her head against the brush asking for more. Since Zoe was so fat, she couldn't reach around to groom her back, and the brushing felt wonderful. Her coat is very glossy now from all the pampering! Click on the short video below to see how much Zoe loves getting brushed.   Zoe is very affectionate and likes being around people, but she needs a certain kind of home: No young children, no other cats, and someone who understands that she has her boundaries. She doesn't love being picked up, probably because it's uncomfortable due to her weight, but her foster mom has picked her up and held her, and she will tolerate it sometimes. Zoe will give warnings ahead of time when she's getting stressed (usually swishing her tail).   Zoe has lost an astonishing 6 lbs since May, and you can tell she feels so much better! She can now groom properly and even jumps around the room and up on the sofa asking for attention. At age 12, she's very vibrant, and had many more healthy, wonderful years left, especially as she continues to lose a bit  more weight. She cannot be allowed to free-feed and can never eat people food or excessive treats. In foster care, Zoe eats two meals a day of high-quality cat kibble and some canned food on top. She gets two or three treats a day, and boy, does she look forward to them!    Zoe came to OCAS as a severely unhealthy, depressed, angry girl, and she's transformed over the last few months. We think that once she's in a stable, calm home and continues on her weight loss plan, she will get even better - physically and emotionally. Her foster mom says Zoe is loving, funny, and calm, and she's got a lot of love to give someone who can provide the environment and patience she needs.    Are you a perfect match for big, beautiful Zoe?
