Meet Duke, the 4 month old pittie mix. Duke was recently adopted from the Shelter but came back after a family member experienced an unexpected surgery that will make caring for a puppy particularly difficult. Duke lived with two cats in his mot recent home. He was a bit playful with them. A home with dog-savvy cats may be a fit with a slow, thoughtful introduction. Typical to puppies his age, Duke is still perfecting life skills and manners like potty training, age appropriate socialization and leash walking. Adopters will need to ensure that they have the time, patience and resources to meet Duke’s day to day needs. Bonding with Duke through positive reinforcement based training will be a way for Duke to learn these new skills as well as his new family. A home with a dog may be a fit after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. Duke is looking for a guardian who is active and able to meet the needs of a pup who has lots of energy!The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
