Meet Sailor! Sailor is an approximately 6-year-old Lab mix with a big personality, a love of adventure, and an even bigger love for his people. He’s looking for a home where he can be someone’s loyal companion, adventure buddy, and couch potato—all rolled into one. Sailor absolutely lights up when he realizes he’s going for a walk, a car ride, or an outdoor adventure. He gets adorably excited at first, then settles right down once he’s on leash or in the car. He would be an amazing match for someone who enjoys hiking, exploring, or spending time near the water. And water is definitely Sailor’s happy place. He LOVES swimming, playing fetch in a pool or lake, and enthusiastically “attacking” the spray from a garden hose. He does great on a pontoon boat and would probably take well to paddleboarding or canoeing with a little training. On trails, he has excellent recall off leash and loves getting out to explore. For all his adventurous energy, Sailor is just as happy relaxing at home. He loves being near his people and curling up on the couch. He is crate trained and willingly goes into his kennel—often choosing to rest there on his own. He also rides calmly in the car, including on long trips. Sailor has had three weeks of professional sleep-away training and knows a great list of commands, including heel, sit, stay, down, place, kennel, here, “leave me alone,” and more. He walks nicely on leash and is very food motivated. His all-time favorite treat is hard-boiled egg yolk; he can hear the little “tap tap” of an egg on the counter from practically anywhere in the house and will come running! He also has excellent house manners and does not chew things that aren’t his toys. Sailor would thrive best as the only pet in the home. Cats are far too intriguing and, in his opinion, clearly meant to be chased. He has done well with some smaller dogs, particularly more submissive females. On walks, he is generally easy to redirect around other reactive dogs, although he may respond if another dog surprises or challenges him through a fence. Most of all, Sailor loves being part of his family. He wants to be included, whether that means heading out for an adventure or hanging out together at home. He would do best in an adults-only household or a home with older teenagers. Sailor’s current family loves him deeply and is heartbroken to be looking for a new home for him. Before they adopted him, Sailor had spent about two years living in a kennel. Sailor is comfortable with affection from adults—even big hugs—but he is uneasy about being touched by young children, likely because of something in his life before he joined the family. Because their children understandably want to love on him, his family has made the difficult decision that Sailor deserves a home where everyone can feel comfortable and where he can truly thrive. Sailor has already been through a lot, and he has so much love, fun, companionship, and adventure left to give. In the right home—one without young children and preferably without other pets—he is going to make someone an incredibly devoted best friend.
