MEET WINSTON!   Talk about having come a long way, this cutie pie has made big strides in his foster home since coming to the rescue. Previously adopted and returned three times at the shelter, he was in desperate need of some stability and structure. Now that he’s had some time to get both, he is quickly learning his manners and the behaviors that will make the next adoption his last.   Winston is thought to be about 2 years old, but does act a bit younger. He is about 18 lbs and will always need grooming throughout his lifetime, so please have a groomer chosen. Now for the fun stuff…   Winston has been training with his foster family and has learned to like his crate and will go in when asked. He knows several basic obedience commands and is mostly housebroken (he is a nighttime phantom pooper occasionally). He lives with a large, sweet labrador and two cats along with his foster humans. He does exceptionally well with his foster canine brother and now does well with the one cat that leaves him alone. He still loses his marbles when the other cat taunts him. His reactivity to dogs walking by the yard or out and about is still a work in progress, but he is learning to break his focus and return his attention to his handler when asked. He is extremely agile and can fit through fence posts or even a railing, so having a secure yard is a must with this little houdini. Like lots of small dogs, he can be vocal but he can also be a snuggler and will cuddle you like it’s nobody’s business. He can be mouthy in a playful way, but it’s not appropriate and it’s another habit his foster family is trying to break him of. He also doesn’t have any reliable recall so he is on a long line when out in the yard to help remind him that he needs to come when called. Because of his mouthiness and size, any kids in the home must be over the age of 10.    Having said all that, this little guy is still super affectionate, fun and playful. He is a hoot to have around and a sweet little buddy. His future human(s) must be prepared to continue to provide him structure and training though, or his bad habits will creep back into the picture. No one wants that. But if he continues to act half as nice as he looks, he will be just fine.    Winston’s adoption donation fee is $450, which includes spay/neuter, routine vetting and a microchip.
