Please make a donation of your choice to DPS in honor of senior rescue dogs.   Bubba’s Golden Years   At 16 years old, Bubba never expected to find himself searching for a family again. He was originally adopted from DPS, but when his beloved owner passed away, he returned to our care. Now this sweet, gentle Shih Tzu is hoping for a peaceful home where he can feel safe, cherished, and surrounded by love for the rest of his golden years.   A Gentle Old Soul   Bubba was understandably sad when he first arrived in his foster home. For the first couple of days, he kept his distance and walked away when anyone tried to reach for him. His whole world had changed, and he needed time to understand that he was safe.   With patience—and a little reassurance from the other dogs in his foster home—Bubba gradually began to open his heart again. He now recognizes his name, comes when called, and happily accepts head rubs and full-body massages. He may not be a lap dog or traditional cuddler, but he likes to remain close to his person and generously hands out kisses.   The Bubba Schedule   Bubba wakes up around 6 a.m. and heads outside to take care of business. He is fully housetrained and has not had any accidents in his foster home. He generally eats breakfast around 9 a.m. and dinner around 6 p.m.   Bubba is an exceptionally picky eater and will hold out if a meal does not meet his very specific standards. He currently eats We Feed Raw, which has a softer texture than traditional kibble. His adopter should be prepared to continue finding foods that appeal to him and make sure this discerning little gentleman keeps eating consistently.   He enjoys two leisurely walks each day—one around 9 a.m. and another around 8:30 p.m. Bubba walks slowly but steadily, follows his person nicely, and never pulls. He does not have the stamina for long walks or extended activity, but he seems to enjoy getting outside and taking in the neighborhood at his own comfortable pace.   During the day, Bubba rests near his foster while she works. At night, he sleeps soundly in a dog bed or on the carpet beside his foster family’s bed. He has needed a middle-of-the-night potty break only once.   Professionally Relaxed   Bubba spends most of his time resting, lounging, and keeping quiet company with his person. He is not interested in chewing, digging, or creating household drama—and his foster has yet to hear him bark.   He currently lives with two young, small mixed-breed dogs. They occasionally sniff him, but everyone mostly gives one another space. Bubba does not seek out interaction or play with the other dogs, although their presence may have helped him feel more comfortable when he first arrived.   Bubba sometimes chooses to retreat to the backyard while his foster family watches television, possibly because the noise is too loud for him. A calm home where he has quiet, comfortable places to rest would suit him beautifully.   A Home for His Golden Years   Bubba needs an adopter who is prepared to spoil him rotten for however long he has left. He is looking for softness: a cozy bed, gentle walks, good meals, soothing massages, and someone who will treasure every day they share with him.   The Sweetest Kisses   One of Bubba’s most endearing qualities is his love of giving kisses—even if his breath sometimes makes them especially memorable. His foster offers him dental sticks, but true to form, picky Bubba requires a little persuasion. He watches the other dogs enthusiastically devour theirs while his foster repeatedly presents his stick for inspection. Eventually, he decides it meets his standards and joins in.   Bubba has already experienced a profound loss. What he needs now is someone willing to give him the very best chapter of his life: a person with the time, heart, and compassion to love him completely, however long that chapter may be.
