  Adoption fee: $800   Meet Ember!   Ember is a very special little 13 week old puppy whose bright spirit has carried her through a painful beginning. She arrived at DPS when she was just nine weeks old after being abandoned at a shelter. Her back was raw and covered in sores, and she was clearly uncomfortable and sensitive to touch—yet all she wanted was love.   After several veterinary visits and a skin biopsy, it was determined that Ember’s injuries were caused by some type of burn. The fur on her back may never fully grow back, but Ember doesn’t mind being one of a kind. She also happens to look fabulous in doggy shirts, so her future wardrobe has endless possibilities.   Full of Fire   Ember may have had a rough start, but she certainly doesn’t dwell on it. She is an incredibly happy, goofy, loving puppy who approaches life at full speed.   She seemed quiet and subdued on her first day in foster care, but by day two, the real Ember had arrived—and she was ready to play. She loves chasing people through the house, being chased in return, wrestling with toys, and investigating everything around her. She is usually carrying a toy, lying beside one, or following her people in search of her next activity.   Ember isn’t much of a traditional cuddler unless she is thoroughly exhausted. Even when she climbs into a lap, she would generally prefer to keep playing. Sitting still is simply not high on her current list of priorities.   A Day in Ember’s World   Ember wakes with her foster family around 6:00 AM and heads to the balcony to use her potty pad. Because she is not yet fully vaccinated, she cannot explore public areas or go for walks just yet. After her morning potty break, she returns inside to play with the kids before they leave for school.   Her food and water are available throughout the day so she can eat and drink when she likes. When her foster family briefly leaves, Ember stays either in her crate or in a secure area with a bed, food, water, and toys. She may show a little concern when she realizes someone is leaving, but she settles quickly. At night, she sleeps quietly and contentedly in her crate. When her people return—even if they only stepped outside for a moment—Ember greets them as though they have returned from a years-long expedition.   Dogs, Cats and Kids   Ember lives with a very small dog whom she would love to recruit as a playmate. When the resident dog tells her she isn’t interested, Ember respects the correction and gives her space.   She also lives with three tiny foster kittens and is fascinated by them. She enjoys watching and sniffing them, but because she is an enthusiastic puppy who sometimes views them as exciting moving toys, her interactions are carefully managed.   Her foster siblings are 10 and 12 years old, and Ember has a blast chasing them around the house and wrestling over toys. She is still learning to play gently and can be mouthy and nippy when excited, so she will do best with children old enough to understand puppy behavior and participate in her training.   Flames, Fuzz and Fashion   Ember sheds very little. The small amount she does shed is more like fine peach fuzz and is barely noticeable on clothing.   Her exposed skin and missing fur make her wonderfully unique—and provide an excellent excuse to build her a collection of cute shirts. Her adopters should be prepared to continue working with their veterinarian to care for and protect her sensitive skin as she grows.   Professional Couch Jumper   Ember once attempted to jump onto the couch and face-planted directly into its side. Completely undeterred, she tried again, made it onto the couch—and promptly rolled back off. On her third attempt, she landed squarely in her foster brother’s lap and looked extremely proud of herself.   She is now an expert couch jumper. Ember may not get everything right on the first try, but quitting has never occurred to her.   Still a Puppy   Ember is teething and chews when she is bored, entertained, awake, and probably while thinking about her next opportunity to chew. Fortunately, she loves toys and can usually be redirected to something appropriate. She also barks during play and when visitors arrive, but she remains quiet in her crate overnight.   She will need continued help with potty training, puppy manners, gentle play, and appropriate chewing. Once she is fully vaccinated and cleared to explore, she will be thrilled to channel her considerable energy into walks, adventures, training, and plenty of playtime.   Ember’s Forever Home   Ember’s ideal family will be active, patient, and ready for a puppy who operates at maximum enthusiasm. She would love energetic people who will provide plenty of exercise and enrichment, or a family with older children who understand that she is still learning not to nip during play.   Despite everything she endured before coming to DPS, Ember is joyful, trusting, and overflowing with personality. Her scars tell the story of where she has been, but they do not define where she is going. With her silly spirit, determined little heart, and growing collection of fashionable shirts, Ember is ready to light up a home of her own.
