Ahh, that changes the meaning of “dresser cat” completely. He wasn’t choosing the dresser as his favorite spot—his crate on your dresser became his little safe world because, at first, he truly didn’t want anything more. And then he changed. That’s really the heart of his story. Moochie — Ready to Retire from Being a Dresser Cat Moochie spent much of his life as a community cat. Then he disappeared.He wasn't seen for about a month, and when he finally showed up again, the people who knew him thought he was dying. They took him to their local animal control, Heartland was contacted, and Moochie came into our care. He was skinny. His fur was yellow. He was depressed and just seemed to have given up.Once he was with us, we discovered he also had cat lice. His coat was in such terrible condition that off it came—Moochie was shaved completely naked. And so began the recovery of one very sad, very naked cat. Then We Found Something ElseAt the vet, an ear mass was discovered.Moochie was treated for everything else he had going on while we continued to monitor his ear. Eventually, the mass was removed and sent for pathology.We got the news we were hoping for: it was a benign ear polyp. Because of where the polyp was located, not all of the tissue could be reached and removed from his ear canal. There is a chance it could grow back in the future, so his adopter will need to continue monitoring his ear. The Dresser CatWhen Moochie first came into foster care, his world was a crate on top of a dresser.And honestly? We thought he might be perfectly content to live out his life right there.Moochie didn't want to be touched. He didn't want to be moved. After everything he had been through, his crate was safe, and he seemed to want nothing more than to be left alone in it.So we let Moochie be Moochie.And then, little by little, something changed. He started accepting pets.Then he started wanting pets.He began moving around more. He became interested in what was happening outside of his little space. The cat who once wanted nothing more than to stay safely tucked away in his crate started showing us that maybe he wasn't finished after all.Moochie turned into a real cat. Now he's active. He's up. He's moving around. He enjoys attention and absolutely loves being petted.Being picked up? Ehhh...Moochie would prefer that we keep that to a minimum. Four paws on the ground, please.And we think he's finally ready to retire from being a dresser cat. What Moochie Is Looking ForMoochie doesn't need a busy household or a ton of excitement. After the life he's had, simple sounds pretty wonderful. No small children No dogs He may be okay with another calm cat who will mostly leave him alone He would probably be happiest as an only cat He needs someone who will respect his boundaries and let affection happen on his termsMoochie came to us looking like a cat who had given up.For a while, we thought giving him a safe crate, good food, medical care and a soft place to rest might simply be enough.Moochie decided otherwise. He wants pets. He wants to move around. He wants to be part of things.And now this former community cat—and longtime dresser cat—is ready for something we weren't sure he'd ever want:A home of his very own and a soft place to spend the rest of his life.
