Description
This is Bear's storyJuly 31, 2026 someone dumped two dogs off of H and 94, near a little private owned lake back off the highway, surrounded by cornfields. The female (we'd later learn was his sister) was caught right away by St Charles County AC, but the male wouldn't be caught.Ernie took a trap and camera out there and set up to see if the dog would come back around looking for the female. He didn't show up that night or the next day. Little did we know he had started running. And boy did he run! Aug 1 there were sightings by a creek on 94 halfway up to West Alton. Aug 2 there were sightings of him running in traffic on 94. We spent the weekend looking for him with no luck.On Aug 3, there was a report of him in Portage Des Sioux at Hideaway Harbor, nearly 10 miles away! We asked that someone snap a pic, and it surely was him!As we made plans to get a trap out there ASAP and asked people in the area to set out food, I guess Bear had decided he was tired and done running. This dog wouldn't need trapping, he walked right up to a family and some kids, and surrendered! They got him on a leash and Ernie picked him up. He was the sweetest baby! As I drove him to the St Charles County Pet Adoption Center, he laid his head on my shoulder and told me his whole sad story. I just wanted to hug him all night. When we got to the shelter he was greeted by his sister who had been there a few days, and he was so excited to see her.Bear is STILL at the shelter, his sister has been adopted. If you are looking for a friend for your dog, don't pass up the chance to meet Bear. He loves kids and other dogs, and would make a great new best friend!
