Description

She was on the run for three weeks before her body just about gave out on her, she was found almost lifeless in a ditch by animal control.  At the shelter she received some intake vetting and once she got some food and water in her she perked up and started feeling and looking much better.  We named her Gemma and she moved to her temporary foster home in Indiana to get her safe and to work on getting the rest of her needed vetting done. She does very well with other dogs and is just the sweetest girl ever. 4/9 UPDATE:  Gemma saw the vet while at her temporary foster home and tested heartwork, tickborne disease and fecal negative...YAY!  She has also put on some much needed weight.  She arrived at her Minnesota foster home last weekend...she did amazing on transport and loved everyone!  Her foster mom & dad are getting to know her and so far we know she LOVES lounging around with her people. We are working on getting her in to be spayed and she has a preliminary vet appointment scheduled for 4/14.   8/12 UPDATE:  A lot has gone on for Gemma!  She was found to have a mild heart arrythmia, had lots of testing done and no medication needed now per the cardioolgist. She was cleared for spay surgery with extra precautions and that was done on 7/29 with no issues.  Dr. Rose would like for Gemma to wear a heart monitor for a few days so they can get a better idea on the arrythmia and if there have been any changes since her last testing.  We are working on getting that done.  Gemma has been good with other dogs, both big and small.  She is NOT good with cats.  She is sweet and gentle with kids.  Gemma has been learning how not to pull on the leash and has made some improvements on that.  She is housebroken but does need some training on crating up.  Gemma was moved to a temporary foster home as she went into heat a few weeks before her spay surgery and her foster fur sister was not caring too much for all of the hormones.  Now that Bemma has been spayed and healed up from surgery, we are going to try the two girls together again to see how things go.  It is possible that they will go back to being friends, but also possible that they will not be able to coexist in the same home. UPDATE 8/20:  Gemma is such a sweet girl. She bonded (to us) very quickly.  She loves people and has done very well with our dog (older female Doxie).  She  loves to cuddle on the couch and sleeps next to our bed at night.  She has had no accidents in the house.  Gemma is doing better on the leash every day, she is just fearful of large vehicles. She eats her food next to our dog and does not beg for “people” food. Gemma is starting to know her name and comes when she is called.  She is so smart and can pop open a door. Although she was docile at first, she is wagging her tail more and getting that boxer “bounce”.  The only thing that puts her on edge is when a male walks in the door.  She barks, but stays put.  She does well with people and activity around her; she doesn’t miss a thing happening. Gemma has lots of love to give to a family.
