Description

Debo is a handsome young Doberman mix. Debo grew up in a home with teenagers and has experience around younger children. Debo has briefly been exposed to felines in a temporary home and saw them but has not met them. A home with dog-savvy felines and a very slow, thoughtful introduction may be a fit in his next home. Debo was described as house trained in his previous home and also was crate trained. He knows `sit,` `shake,` `down,` and `come` cues and he's got a good start on `stay,` but could use more practice. He likes treats pretty well, and seems to enjoy positive training. He has been endearing and sociable with people since his arrival to the Shelter, leaning in for petting and enjoying attention. As a youngster, he still has plenty of energy and will thrive with an active family who will get out his energy through walks, hikes, games of fetch, and positive reinforcement training. Based on observations at the Shelter, Debo is a bit inexperienced around other dogs, which can lead to some conflicting behaviors when he sees them - he's both a little nervous and very eager to meet them, and when he does meet them, he can come on a bit too strong... A home with a well-socialized dog may be a fit with a slow, thoughtful introduction at the Shelter and some management in the home. He spent a lot of time outdoors in his previous home, so he'd love a home with a securely-fenced yard or property where he could enjoy the outdoors regularly, as well as some patience from his family if they want him to spend more time indoors or going for car rides - he gets pretty nervous for those right now. Getting to spend plenty of time with his people will help keep Debo happy and feeling safe and secure, and he'll likely adapt to car rides if he has a few fun outings .The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
