Description

OTHER PETS: Mikey is interested in other dogs, greets them appropriately and communicates well. He would likely get along with most dogs and would do best with a similarly playful dog who can communicate and provide feedback well. Mikey should meet any dog he would be living with prior to adoption. [Likely (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Experience with positive reinforcement or willingness to learn will be an ideal fit. Mikey will need an owner who is very experienced helping dogs who struggle with over-arousal such as humping and jumping, which are best helped with non confrontational methods and positive reinforcement for paws on the ground. while he is very friendly and outgoing he will need consistent guidance and lots of patience to help him grow into a well adjusted pup while building confidence. [Very Experienced]KIDS: Mikey is a outgoing, playful dog who has struggled with arousal and has shown mild resource guarding while at TJO. While he is not aggressive to people, his tendency to hump when aroused does not make him a good fit for a home with small humans. We want Mikey to be set up for success, so his human family members should be old enough to understand how to interact with him safely when he is excited, to allow him to eat without disturbance. Minors and dogs, especially dogs who need additional help feeling safe, should be actively suprevised for everyone's comfort. [15+ (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mikey is playful with humans and has a passing interest in toys here at TJO, which can change in a home with someone willing to teach him toys are fun. He will do well with a combination of regular exercise combined with mental enrichment such as food puzzles, games, and learning fun tricks to fully meet his needs. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: Mikey arrived at TJO severely emaciated, while he has recovered to a healthy weight the long term consequences of such severe neglect during his development may have unforseen consequences. Mikey will need a good relationship with a vet to ensure that any health complications are able to be addressed promptly. [Above Average] GROOMING: [Routine] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Mikey develop a bond with his new owner, build confidence, and learn new skills and fun tricks. Mikey is working on loose-leash walking and will need help learning that all paws on the ground will continue the fun. [Moderate]
