* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, September 5th from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption Fee: $650 Meet Wonton! If you’ve ever ordered a bowl of wonton soup, you already know that the best part is the little surprise hiding inside. Well, our Wonton is exactly that, a sweet little surprise who has been slowly unfolding into one of the most fun, spunky puppies around! Wonton is an 8 month old Chow weighing only 36lbs who came to us from a breeder, and while she may have started out a little shy and unsure of this whole “being a dog” thing, she is now discovering just how delicious life can be! When Wonton first arrived at her foster home, she spent her first 36 hours hiding in her crate. Once she finally ventured out, she mostly stayed outside and would retreat to her pen whenever something made her nervous. New sights, new sounds, new people, it was all a LOT for this little girl. But then something wonderful happened… She started watching the resident dogs. Wonton absolutely LOVES other dogs, and her foster siblings have been her confidence coaches, showing her that the world isn’t quite as scary as she thought. Little by little, she started venturing inside, exploring the house, playing, prancing, lounging, and acting more and more like the silly puppy she really is. Today, Wonton is a fun, playful, medium-energy puppy who loves following her people around and being part of whatever is happening. She may still be cautious with new humans, but once she decides you’re part of her circle, she wants to be right there beside you. And her foster family says she has truly blossomed into a spunky little girl! Wonton is still a little shy when meeting new people and isn’t quite ready to accept pets from just anyone. In fact, she has a hilarious little routine: she’ll follow you around, come over for kisses, and then if you reach out to pet her she may suddenly decide, “Actually, I’ll take my affection to go!” But patience pays off. After a little over a week in her foster home, she was already allowing her foster mom to pet her occasionally. With time, patience, and of course cheese, Wonton has learned that humans can be pretty great too. And now? She’s becoming food obsessed! When she first arrived, Wonton was content with her kibble. Her foster family has since introduced her to all sorts of foods and treats, and she has discovered that snacks are, in fact, one of life’s greatest inventions. She is highly food motivated, which is wonderful for continuing her training and helping her build confidence. Wonton is still learning some of the basics of being a dog. Leash walking is a work in progress, but she’s gaining confidence and her foster family is taking it slowly. She isn’t ready to hit the hiking trails just yet, but she’s beginning to understand that a leash doesn’t have to be scary. She’s also doing well with potty training when given regular opportunities to go outside. She doesn’t quite know how to tell her humans she needs to go out yet, but if the patio door is open, she happily chooses the grass. She’s had a couple of accidents, but even those have been on potty pads. She’s clearly figuring things out! At home, Wonton does well when left alone and can be loose in the house with access to the backyard or safely set up in an x-pen. She enjoys having room to explore, play, and then settle down for one of her many puppy naps. She’s also wonderful with other dogs. She currently lives with two dogs, one large and one medium and absolutely adores them. She prefers canine companionship and loves following them around and playing with them. They have played a huge role in helping her become the confident little Wonton she is today. She’s also been around children ages 10 and 12 and has been completely wonderful with them. She’s never shown aggression toward anyone and is described by her foster family as extremely sweet. As for cats? She approached a couple of cats while they were safely in crates and showed no concerning reaction, although her full cat compatibility is still unknown. Now let’s talk about one of Wonton’s best party tricks… THE WONTON BOUNCE. When she’s excited or playing, Wonton doesn’t just jump, she launches straight into the air like a spring! Her foster family says it’s one of their favorite things about her. She’ll also bark when she wants to play and put her paws on you when she’s looking for attention. Translation: “Excuse me, human. I have requested PLAY TIME.”  Wonton is still a puppy, so she has some puppy habits. She has occasionally tried chewing on furniture when bored, but she’s easily redirected when told no. What Wonton Needs Wonton needs a family who understands that trust can’t be rushed. She’s not going to be the puppy who immediately runs up to a stranger and asks for belly rubs. She needs someone who will let her come out of her shell at her own pace and celebrate the little victories along the way. A home with a secure yard and another confident, friendly dog would be ideal. Other dogs give Wonton comfort and confidence, and she truly loves having canine companions around. Most importantly, she needs someone who will recognize that underneath her initial shyness is a sweet, playful, affectionate puppy who is just learning how wonderful being someone’s dog can be. Her transformation has already been incredible to watch. She went from hiding in her crate and being afraid of the world to prancing through the house, following her people, playing with toys, bouncing straight into the air when excited, asking for attention, and discovering that treats are AMAZING. Every day, Wonton gains a little more confidence. Every day, she learns something new. And every day, she gets a little closer to becoming the happy, silly companion she’s meant to be. Her foster family says it best: “She is just loving learning how to be a dog!” And we think this little Wonton is going to make someone’s life a whole lot sweeter.  Wonton is ready for her forever family but please remember, she’s a slow-cooked kind of love. Give her time, patience, companionship, and plenty of snacks, and you’ll get to watch one of the most rewarding transformations unfold right before your eyes.
