* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, September 5th from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption. Adoption Fee: $650 Chopstix. Yes, that is his name. No, he does not come with takeout. Although honestly, with a face this adorable, we’re pretty sure he could get away with charging a delivery fee. Chopstix is a 2 year old, 48-pound Chow who came from a breeder, and this big, fluffy guy is about as sweet as they come. He looks like a bear, walks around like he owns the place, and has perfected the art of doing absolutely nothing while somehow being the most interesting thing in the room. He is basically 48 pounds of floof, sweetness and “I’ll think about it.” Chopstix is a pretty chill guy. He enjoys lounging, soaking up the sunshine, hanging out with his person and generally living a life that requires very little rushing. Why hurry when you can stroll? Why run when you can casually investigate? Why stand when there is a perfectly good floor available? He is potty trained, crate trained, quiet and wonderfully well behaved in the house. He doesn’t bark, doesn’t chew anything inappropriate and can happily entertain himself with his toys. When he needs some alone time, he will actually put himself in his crate for a nap. He is basically the kind of roommate everyone wishes they had. He’s also a little shy at first. When Chopstix arrived at his foster home, he was nervous and easily startled. Give him a day or two, though, and that fluffy exterior starts to melt. Once he trusts you, he gets attached quickly and will follow you from room to room. Not because he needs anything. He just apparently needs to supervise. Chopstix: Director of Wherever You Are. If something makes him nervous, he has a very sweet solution: hide behind his person. Sometimes he will tuck himself right between your legs for protection. So yes, this enormous fluffy Chow is basically a 48-pound security blanket. He loves being petted, and it helps him feel calm and secure. We think his future person is going to discover that once Chopstix decides you're his person, you have officially been adopted. And then there are his moments of absolute ridiculousness. Most of the time, Chopstix is a professional lounger. But every now and then, the switch flips and THE CHOPSTIX COMES OUT. He will suddenly pounce after a treat, wrestle with a toy, roll onto his back and have himself a little party. His favorite game? Playing with his food. He will toss a treat into the air with his paws or mouth, chase it down and pounce on it. Sir. That is a treat, not a tennis ball. But we support his creative process. He would love a home with a yard where he can lounge in the sunshine, sniff around, watch squirrels and contemplate the important questions in life, such as: “Why did you go into the kitchen without me?” “Who is that squirrel and why is he in my yard?” “Is that treat going to be thrown or eaten?” “Could I possibly have another treat?” On walks, Chopstix is friendly and curious. He is still learning that a walk is technically supposed to involve moving forward instead of stopping every twelve seconds to investigate an extremely fascinating smell. He does some pulling because there are apparently VERY IMPORTANT SCENTS TO DISCUSS, but it is manageable. He doesn't bark at people or other dogs and doesn't chase squirrels. He is very interested in other dogs and has shown himself to be respectful of dogs who don't particularly want to be his friend. He even lived with an unfriendly dog and respected her boundaries. He also encountered an unfriendly cat who gave him a few hisses, and Chopstix immediately decided: “Message received. I will be needing no further information from this cat.” Honestly, smart move. Chopstix would do well in a patient, loving home where he can settle in at his own pace. A yard would be wonderful, and another dog could potentially be a fun companion, although it isn't a requirement. What he really needs is someone who will give him time to feel safe, let him decompress and allow his sweet personality to come out. And please don't plan on keeping him crated all day. Chopstix would much rather have access to his home, his toys and, preferably, a sunny patch of yard where he can conduct his daily squirrel surveillance. He is quiet. He is gentle. He is house trained. He is crate trained. He doesn't destroy the house. He doesn't bark. He likes other dogs. He loves his toys. He loves his treats. He loves his person. And he looks at you upside down. Seriously. If you make a noise or talk to him, instead of turning his whole body around, Chopstix will sometimes just tilt his head and look at you upside down. Because apparently turning around is simply too much effort. Chopstix isn't looking for a complicated life. He's looking for his person, a comfy place to lounge, some sunshine, a few toys, a yard to investigate and someone willing to appreciate his very particular brand of fluffy weirdness. And maybe a few treats. Actually, definitely a few treats. Just don't expect him to eat them immediately. He has to play with them first. If you're looking for a big, beautiful, sweet Chow who will quietly follow you around, make you laugh, keep you company and occasionally turn a treat into an Olympic sporting event, Chopstix may be your guy. Come meet Chopstix. He promises to bring the fluff. You bring the snacks. And yes… he knows his name is Chopstix. We think he's pretty proud of it.
