Calamari

 * This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, September 5th from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $800 Calamari is a 14 month old, 32-pound Cardigan Welsh Corgi who is smart, energetic, confident, and absolutely ready to learn how great life can be with the right person. Calamari is a working breed through and through. He is happiest when he has a job, a routine, and clear expectations. He is incredibly smart and you can actually see how proud of himself he is when he figures something out. He loves learning commands and thrives when his person gives him something to accomplish. That said, Calamari is not a dog who will do well with a completely hands-off or overly permissive household. He has had very little structure or guidance in his previous life, and he is still learning that humans make the rules. When he doesn't have clear boundaries, he can become bossy, overly excited, barky, and difficult to manage. He is also very sensitive to big human emotions, so his person needs to be calm, confident, consistent, and willing to follow through. Calamari is currently learning that good things come from being calm and listening. He is working on waiting patiently for food, toys, and going outside, learning to focus on his person when distracted, and understanding that commands like sit, down, watch me, and go to bed aren't optional. He is also learning how to walk properly on a leash. This is a skill he was never really taught, so walks are currently a work in progress. His ideal home is someone who genuinely enjoys training a dog. Think of the person who would love having a daily routine, teaching tricks and commands, taking a structured 40–60 minute walk every day, and making Calamari work his brain as well as his body. A rancher, trainer-minded person, or someone who enjoys working with smart, active dogs could be a fantastic match. Calamari doesn't need someone who is going to feel sorry for him or let him run the show. He needs someone who will calmly say, "This is what we're doing," and consistently help him understand the rules. In return, you get an incredibly bright dog who wants to figure things out, wants to please, and has all the potential to become an amazing companion. Calamari is not a finished product. He's a very smart young Corgi who needs a confident human willing to put in the work. With structure, consistency, exercise, training, and clear boundaries, we believe this boy can be a GREAT dog.
