Meet Carmen Carmen first came to us after being abandoned in a duffel bag alongside two different litters of kittens. Still little more than a kitten herself, she raised every one of her babies with patience, devotion, and quiet strength. After giving so much of herself, it should finally be Carmen’s turn to be someone’s whole world. Sadly, Carmen has been returned to us again. She has now experienced the heartbreak of losing several homes—not because she isn’t loving, but because none of them proved to be the right lifelong fit. This time, we are determined to find someone who truly understands her and is committed to giving her the stability she deserves. According to her original foster, Carmen is “one of the most loving and affectionate cats she has ever known.” When Carmen feels safe and has a space to call her own, her personality blossoms. She seeks out attention and happily soaks up pets, affection, and companionship. She may not enjoy being picked up, but once you understand and respect her preferences, her love is incredibly genuine and rewarding. Carmen’s most recent adopter reported some incidents of biting sock-covered feet, as well as grabbing, biting, and wrestling with arms or legs when she became overstimulated. We believe these behaviors may have been related to overzealous play, overstimulation, or redirected energy or aggression—not a lack of affection or an inherently aggressive temperament. They do not erase the deeply loving cat her fosters and volunteers know her to be, but they do mean Carmen needs a calm, patient, cat-savvy person who can recognize her signals, redirect her energy appropriately, respect her boundaries, and give her space when she needs it. While other cats are not Carmen’s favorite thing, she has peacefully coexisted with cats at the adoption center. We believe she would be happiest as the only cat in her home, where she can relax and enjoy having her person and her space to herself. However, a home with another calm, respectful cat may be considered if the environment and personalities are truly the right fit. She has also lived peacefully with a calm senior dog who largely ignored her, so she may do well with a similarly quiet, respectful dog who won’t pressure her to interact. Carmen may not be the right cat for every household—but for the right person, she could be everything. She loves deeply, in her own language and on her own terms, and there is something incredibly special about earning the trust of a cat like her. After surviving abandonment, raising two litters, and repeatedly losing the homes she thought were forever, Carmen deserves stability. She deserves to be chosen with intention, understood for exactly who she is, and loved for the rest of her life. She deserves to finally come home.
