Here's Your Quick Peek: Meet Maxwell, a big-hearted Labrador whose life has not always kept its promises to him. Found wandering as a stray in 2022 after the people in his earlier life had lost track of him, Maxwell somehow came through it all still believing people are pretty wonderful. Now almost 8 years old, he is a happy, gentle, easygoing gentleman looking for a family who will make one final promise to him — this time, forever. Maxwell also needs a safe, secure place and plenty of reassurance when thunderstorms roll through. Exercise: Moderate. Maxwell enjoys walks, hikes, exploring and being with his people, but his days of needing a daily run are behind him. He is quite happy enjoying life at a more leisurely Labrador pace. Best with: People who appreciate an easy, affectionate companion. Maxwell enjoys other dogs and especially loves his buddy Patches, but he does not need another dog in his new home. Not ideal for: A hectic household or someone expecting an instant go-everywhere adventure dog. Maxwell has spent several years living a quiet farm life, so suburbia, busy neighborhoods and lots of new experiences should be re-introduced gradually.  He will be just fine but give him some time.   Energy level: Low to medium — happy to go for a walk and explore, equally happy to relax near his people. Maxwell is quite simply a good dog. In fact, he is one of the first dogs we introduce to new caregivers because he is so welcoming, gentle and dependable. He likes people, gets along well with other dogs, and has developed some definite opinions with age: quiet walks are good, comfortable beds are excellent, familiar people are wonderful, and being included in everyday life may be just about perfect. Good with dogs: Yes. Maxwell has done well with dogs of all sizes. He doesk however, expect to have his senior status respected.  No puppies jumping and badgering him!  He could happily live with another calm, respectful dog or enjoy being your one-and-only. Good with kids: We do not have children at the rescue, so Maxwell has not lived with them here. Based on his friendly, easygoing temperament, we believe he could learn to enjoy respectful children. Cats: Yes. He's respectful of cats.   Fun fact: That adorable little surgically docked nubby tail is part of Maxwell's charm (ask for the whole story to see what happened to that tail)— and when he is happy, there is absolutely no mistaking it. He is also highly food motivated and enjoys puzzle toys and lick mats. Maxwell was born on or about September 29, 2018. Life has changed a lot since the young Labrador who first arrived here in 2022 was looking for his next adventure. What Maxwell wants today is much simpler: familiar routines, someone he trusts nearby, a comfortable place to sleep and a family of his own. He has been let down before. We would very much like his next home to be the one that never lets him down again.
