* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 29th from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $800 Meet Whisper: One Ear, Endless Love   Whisper’s past may have been rough, but this sweet girl is ready for her happily ever after. When she arrived at the shelter as a stray, the 2 year old, 15-pound French Bulldog had severe infections in both ears. One ear had been so badly damaged that it could not be saved and had to be removed. But Whisper hasn’t let any of that dampen her spirit—or her extraordinary capacity for love. Her single ear, soulful eyes, and adorably squishy face may be what first catch your attention, but it’s her gentle, affectionate personality that will completely win you over.   A Professional Lounger   Whisper believes that life is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. She wakes around 7:00 a.m., heads outside for a potty break, and then eagerly digs into breakfast—especially when a little wet food is mixed with her kibble. She tolerates her current eye medication beautifully and happily takes her antibiotics tucked inside a pill pocket.   The rest of her day is devoted to exploring the backyard, rearranging her collection of stuffed animals, soliciting affection, and napping in whichever location looks most comfortable. Her crate, dog bed, the floor, and a sunny spot outside are all perfectly acceptable choices. Speed is not really part of Whisper’s vocabulary, although she has been known to trot away enthusiastically with a sweet potato chew.   Dinner is served around 6:30 or 7:00 p.m., and by approximately 9:30, Whisper is ready to settle into her bed or open crate inside her x-pen and snore the night away. She sleeps comfortably through the night and has remained accident-free in her sleeping area.   Please Pet the Frenchie   Whisper lives for affection. She doesn’t need to follow you from room to room, but if you happen to be nearby, she will gaze up at you with those irresistible eyes until you remember your most important responsibility: petting Whisper.   Sit on the floor, and she will happily crawl into your lap. Start rubbing her belly, and she will twist herself into a series of increasingly ridiculous positions. When she is especially happy, she returns the favor by licking whichever part of you happens to be closest.   If staring doesn’t work quickly enough, Whisper performs her signature attention dance. Her front paws begin kneading the ground like a cat making biscuits, sending a very clear message: “Excuse me, I believe I am overdue for more love.”   Slow Strolls and Serious Sniffing   Whisper loves walks and is very easy on leash, but she prefers to take her time. Her outings involve plenty of moseying, investigating, and stopping to sniff all the neighborhood news. She does best on cooler afternoon or evening walks and can usually make it around the block when the temperature is comfortable. Like most Frenchies, she is sensitive to heat and cannot walk as far or as quickly in warm, sunny weather.   She has ignored barking dogs encountered on walks and simply continued sniffing, although her experience interacting directly with other animals in her current foster home is limited.    Whisper has met children ranging from three to seventeen years old and has been calm and comfortable with everyone. She greets new people like old friends and is always pleased to discover another available pair of hands.   The Curator of the Toy Collection   Whisper may not be an athlete, but she has an important job: relocating stuffed animals. She loves digging through the toy box, selecting a stuffie, and carrying it to the rug by the backyard door—or taking it straight outside. She might chew on it briefly before falling asleep beside it, apparently satisfied with her work. She hasn’t destroyed her toys; she simply feels they benefit from an occasional change of scenery.   She is wonderfully quiet and well-mannered. She isn’t mischievous, doesn’t dig, and has shown no inappropriate chewing. She enjoys bully sticks and sweet potato chews, and she will do nearly anything for a piece of Pupperoni. She is generally housetrained when given regular access to the outdoors and can remain comfortably in her x-pen for several hours.   A Bright Future Ahead   Whisper would be a wonderful companion for an individual, couple, older adopter, or family looking for a quiet, affectionate, low-key dog. She would especially enjoy a home with a backyard where she can explore, sunbathe safely, and continue her important work of transporting stuffies.   She appears content as an only dog and doesn’t require a canine sibling to be happy. What she does need is a family prepared to stay on top of her ongoing medical care and the needs that can accompany being a French Bulldog. Her hearing may not be perfect, but she is not deaf. She will be receiving surgery in her other ear and all costs will be covered by the rescue; the rescue will work with her adopter to schedule the surgery.   Whisper has endured more than any dog should, yet she remains trusting, gentle, and full of affection. She asks for very little: good food, a comfortable place to nap, a few leisurely walks, some favorite toys, and all the belly rubs you can provide. In return, she will greet you like an old friend, make you laugh with her quirky little dance, and remind you every day just how deeply a dog can love.
