Description

Meet Milky Way – a young female staffie mix pup with the cutest short-stack legs! Milky Way came to the Shelter via animal control after her previous guardians were unable to provide care for her and the rest of her large canine crew. Milky Way has been enjoying exploring the wider world and cuddling and playing with staff and volunteers since her arrival at the Shelter. Although she came to us with limited experience - just living in her home and yard with her few humans and over a dozen canine relatives, she is a remarkably calm and confident young dog, ready to try just about anything with some praise and positive guidance. She is friendly and sociable with every person she meets and will often just `melt` onto her back for belly rubs. She walks quite well on a harness, but she gets excited when she sees other dogs and will pull to try to meet them. While she has advanced doggy social skills, she hasn't met many dogs outside of her own family yet, so we recommend working on some bonding and positive training before a lot of dog socializing happens. A home with another dog might be a fit after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. High traffic dog areas like dog parks and beaches may be a bit overwhelming for Milky Way as she decompresses, adjusts to a new home and bonds with her new family. She rides well in a car and has shown a tendency toward good house-keeping, but adopters should plan on starting fresh with potty training and give her plenty of opportunities to get outside and get it right! Milky Way is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
