Description
Hatch Date: Approx. 1991 We would like to introduce you to Bumber. Bumber is an estimated 35-year-old, DNA-tested male Orange-winged Amazon. His story is heartbreaking, but his future has the potential to be beautiful Bumber came to us after spending approximately 25 years locked inside an inadequate cage. Bumber has been simply existing with no true quality of life. He has endured severe neglect and has never been allowed to experience the love, freedom, and trust that every companion bird deserves. Today, Bumber is learning something completely new to him: how to trust❤️ Bumber’s foster is taking things slowly, allowing him to set the pace, and so far, he is making amazing progress. Those soulful eyes are always watching, observing, learning, and quietly taking in everything he is being taught. Bumber has recently begun allowing gentle head scratches! This seemingly small milestone is actually enormous for a soul who has spent so much of his life void of physical affection and contact. However, Bumber is still very fearful. He is not yet brave enough to leave his new and spacious housing. The door is open, and the opportunity to stretch his wings is right there waiting for him. When that day comes, when he finally chooses to step through that door and experience the world beyond his cage, it will be an extraordinary moment! Those 25 years of captivity will finally give way to freedom. For now, Bumber Is a fear biter. And this is completely understandable and to be expected, given his experiences. Bumber’s reactions are not about being a “bad bird”; they are a result of a lifetime of learning that being shuffled between people and exposed to unfamiliar and frightening experiences are things to fear. That people are something to fear. Touch and care are foreign to Bumber. That being said, Bumber does not and cannot have someone who will attempt to rush him. This boy really needs someone who understands that trust cannot be demanded. Trust is an exceptionally slow and steady process - especially with the abused and neglected. Bumber needs time, commitment, patience, along with a high degree of understanding. With all of the four mentioned above, he can and will blossom into the bird he was always meant to be. His forever family must be willing to let him heal at his own pace, respect his boundaries, celebrate the smallest victories, and give him the time he needs to discover that life can finally be safe and happy. Bumber has waited so incredibly long to live and to be treated with dignity. To date, Bumber has begun to discover the world of toys and enrichment. He is beginning to forage and discover new fruits and vegetables that he has never been offered. He is finding his voice and being vocal, and he is slowly learning that life does have something to offer him. Bumber has been seen by an Avian Vet, has had a full blood workup, as well as completed disease testing.
