Description

Animal Information:  Cooper is a 3-year-old, 7-pound Chihuahua who came to the Stanislaus shelter as part of an animal welfare case, where she and 18 other dogs were lovingly cared for by shelter staff while the District Attorney's office worked through the legal process. Once the dogs were finally released and available for rescue, we knew we had to help. Cooper, along with Freckles, Littles, and Tasha, all came from the same home. Although he's a little shy at first, he has been incredibly sweet with the shelter staff and just needs a little time to feel safe and let his personality shine. We can't wait to welcome him to the Pacific Northwest and show her what the good life is all about Foster Profile: Cooper aka Fruit Bat is doing really well and has settled into our routine so nicely. He is now fully potty trained at my house and is free roaming indoors when I’m home. He’ll still be crated overnight and when I’m away, but he has been perfect in his crate and has no problem being left alone for several hours. He is also extremely quiet—I haven’t heard him make a single sound since the first night he arrived. He sleeps A LOT and spends most of the day snoozing next to me or on my feet. He gets at least one 30-minute walk every day, and 2–3 times a week we do a longer 1–2 hour walk. Those longer walks are harder for him, so I give him some quieter days in between. He has made a lot of progress on our regular walks. Leaving the house is still the hardest part, but once we get going, he does much better. He used to completely freeze when something scared him, and now he usually just needs one little “click-click” to get moving again. He still doesn’t take treats on walks, but his food drive at home has improved a lot, and we’ve been doing plenty of food games. The biggest change has been seeing more of his personality come out. He still doesn’t really understand toys, although he’ll occasionally stop to chew on one. But he has started getting the zoomies at night and likes to run around with me before bed, which is really fun to see. We also play “Where is Fruit Bat?” where I wander around looking for him until he gets so excited that he starts hyping himself up like, “I’m here! I’m here!” He’s still a sensitive guy and needs someone who will give him time and let him go at his own pace, but he is making steady progress. It’s really nice to see him getting more comfortable, more playful, and more himself.
