Description

Some dogs are naturally timid or shy, while others may not have learned to trust people while they were young. These dogs need to feel safe before they will interact with people; the work to build a relationship of trust could be a long and hard one but the experience can be one of the most rewarding of dog ownership. Chicken Little Dogs: are fearful of new people and places, take time to trust, shut down here at the shelter, and will bite if people push or try to interact too quickly. However, once they trust a person, they often become very bonded.OTHER PETS: We believe Nike would definitely do well as an only dog. Nike sniffed another dog appropriately but was anxious; he might do well with another mellow, well-socialized dog who would give him the space and time he needed to become comfortable interacting and building trust. If Nike were to live with another dog, they would need to meet prior to adoption. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Experience with positive reinforcement or willingness to learn. Nike's best fit would be with someone who will provide ample time to decompress in a new environment over several weeks, and help him feel safe by letting him approach and set the pace. Previous experience with nervous/shut down dogs is ideal. [Some Experience] KIDS: High pitched noises, flailing hands, and sudden movements will scare Nike; he is VERY headshy, wary of hands and dislikes his tail being touched. An older child who who is respectful and able to give a dog space is ideal. Minors should always be actively supervised for everyone's comfort and safety. [13+ / dog savvy (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Once Nike felt safe enough with staff to be leashed and taken outside, he was exploring the outdoor runs and investigated toys without yet playing with them. Once decompressed in a new home he may develop enthusiasm for toys with encouragement. A combination of regular exercise combined with mental enrichment such as food puzzles, sniffing, games, and learning new tricks. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine] GROOMING: Regular brushing will help keep Nike’s coat clean and matt-free between grooms. [Regular Brushing] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement will help Nike learn new skills and fun tricks while building confidence and forming a bond with his with his guardian. [Moderate/Ongoing]
