Description

* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 22nd from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $800 Lanyard: Your New Favorite Attachment   Lanyard is a 10–12 month old, 13-pound Maltese mix who is ready to become permanently attached to a family of her own. Sweet, playful, affectionate, and wonderfully adaptable, this little lady is equally happy racing around with the kids, following the other dogs on an adventure, or curling up between the pillows for a luxurious afternoon nap.   A Day in the Life   Lanyard wakes up around 7 a.m. and heads outside for her morning potty break. Breakfast is served around 7:30 a.m., followed by a walk at approximately 8 a.m. She is always excited when the leash comes out and walks beautifully without pulling, barking at people or dogs, or trying to chase squirrels. Despite her petite size, she has no trouble matching the pace of the larger dogs and can comfortably complete a 30-minute walk.   Once home, Lanyard plays with her foster siblings, explores the house, or joins them at the bay window to supervise the neighborhood. After a full morning of important puppy business, she usually naps from around 11 a.m. until noon. Lunch is served at approximately 12:30 p.m., followed by more playtime and another nap from 3–5 p.m. Her preferred afternoon sleeping arrangement is tucked between the pillows on the bed with her human grandma.   Lanyard takes another walk around 6 p.m. and eats dinner at approximately 7:30 p.m. At night, she sleeps on the bed or snuggles up near her dog friends. She sleeps peacefully through the night without needing any potty breaks. She will go into a crate, but she understandably prefers not to sleep there when she can see that the other dogs are enjoying freedom outside of it.   The Sweetest Little Sidekick   Lanyard was timid when she first arrived in her foster home and spent the first couple of days keeping a careful distance from the larger resident dogs. By the third day, she had decided they were safe—and possibly worth copying. Now she follows along in perfect formation, running through the backyard, chasing balls, playing around the house, and gazing out the window beside them.   She gets along well with dogs of all sizes, although she is naturally most comfortable with dogs closer to her own size. She currently lives with a Golden Retriever and a medium-sized mixed-breed dog and has formed a lovely bond with both.   Lanyard can be cautious when guests first arrive, but she warms up within a few minutes. Once you are part of her circle, expect kisses, cuddles, and an enthusiastic welcome every time you return home. She may be small, but her homecoming celebrations make it clear that your absence has been thoroughly noted.   A Friend to Every Generation   One of Lanyard’s most endearing qualities is her ability to match the energy of the people around her. She is playful and energetic with children but gentle and relaxed when spending time with her foster grandma. She adores the 11-year-old children in her foster home and has also played nicely with neighborhood children between the ages of 5 and 8.   If the kids want to play, Lanyard is ready. If someone wants to settle in with a movie or a book, she is delighted to cuddle beside them.   Playtime and Home Manners   Lanyard is an energetic young dog who enjoys toys, chasing balls, running in the backyard, and joining whatever activity the other dogs have started. She does not chew inappropriate items, dig in the yard, or bark excessively.   When someone arrives at the front door, she may bark for a few minutes to announce the visitor before settling down. She has been left home for a couple of hours with the resident dogs and has done well.   Lanyard is nearly housetrained. She had a few accidents when she first arrived, but she is now successful when her family maintains a consistent schedule and takes her outside at regular intervals. As with any young dog adjusting to a new environment, she may need a brief refresher while learning the routine in her adoptive home.   Dining Arrangements   Lanyard currently prefers to be hand-fed and generally eats only a small amount at each meal. She does not yet eat from her food bowl, although she happily drinks water from it. Her future family should be prepared to continue patiently helping her become more comfortable eating independently.   Coat and Care   Lanyard has a low-shedding coat. As a Maltese mix, she will need regular brushing and professional grooming to keep her coat healthy, comfortable, and free of tangles.   The Perfect Connection   Lanyard is an affectionate, adaptable young dog who could thrive in many different households. She would especially enjoy a family with children, since she absolutely adores them. She would also be happy with a friendly canine companion who can show her the ropes, although the most important thing is having people who will include her in their daily lives.   With her excellent leash manners, playful personality, love of cuddling, and habit of following her friends in perfect tandem, Lanyard is ready to clip herself right onto the heart of her forever family.
