Description
* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 22nd from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption. Adoption fee: $800 Meet Garbanzo: The Perfect Little Bean Garbanzo is a 1–2 year old, 11-pound Maltipoo who arrived at DPS Rescue with his buddy Chickpea. Chickpea found a forever home a couple of weeks ago, and now it’s Garbanzo’s turn to become the most important little legume in someone’s life. With his happy tail, mellow personality, excellent manners, and signature “twizzle jump,” Garbanzo is an easygoing companion who fits comfortably into just about any routine. He has a non-shedding coat, but his soft fur is prone to matting and will require regular brushing and professional grooming. A Curious Little Neighbor Garbanzo may initially be timid in an unfamiliar environment, but give him a little time and his cheerful personality quickly appears. When he arrived at his foster home, he wasted no time investigating every room, cabinet, closet, and crevice as though he had been hired to perform a full property inspection. He remains wonderfully curious about household activities. Garbanzo likes to follow his foster family from room to room to see what everyone is doing, but once his curiosity is satisfied, he is perfectly happy to wander away and settle in his own space. Garbanzo enjoys affection and snuggling, but he also appreciates his alone time. Sometimes he’ll curl up beside you, and other times he’ll claim his dog bed and enjoy a peaceful afternoon nap. He is affectionate without being demanding and independent without being distant—the best of both beans. Garbanzo’s Daily Recipe Garbanzo wakes around 6:30 a.m. and eats breakfast at approximately 7:00. Dinner is served around 6:30 p.m., with plenty of his beloved treats appearing throughout the day. He takes two daily walks, usually shortly after each meal, plus two additional potty breaks. When time permits, his walks include a detour to the park for extra sniffing, socializing, and neighborhood exploration. During the day, he lounges in the living room, often choosing the dog bed beside his foster’s workspace. At bedtime, Garbanzo goes into his crate once he realizes the day is officially over. He settles nicely and sleeps soundly through the night. A Champion Lounger Garbanzo is generally more of a lounger than a nonstop action hero, but he still has playful moments and looks forward to his walks. He is happy to relax while his people work, join the family for an outing, or supervise whatever is happening around the house. His greatest bursts of athleticism occur when his foster comes home. Garbanzo celebrates by leaping into the air while spinning in a circle—a maneuver known as the “twizzle jump.” Is he a gymnast? A ballerina? A tiny bean with Olympic ambitions? The judges remain undecided, but his enthusiasm earns a perfect score. Friends of Every Size Garbanzo currently lives with Ollie, a 22-pound Doodle. They aren’t inseparable best friends, but they enjoy what his foster calls “platonic companionship.” They coexist easily, occasionally play, and sometimes nap together on the couch. He has also greeted dogs of various sizes politely, including a Golden Retriever weighing more than 70 pounds. Garbanzo is friendly without being overwhelming, generally exchanging a few sniffs and tail wags before continuing on his way. He has met children at the park and has been gentle and happy to receive polite pets. His calm, cheerful demeanor could make him a lovely companion for a family with respectful children. Garbanzo has not been tested with cats. Walks, Potty Training, and Home Manners Garbanzo walks beautifully on leash without pulling, lunging, or barking at passing people and animals. He enjoys exploring nature and believes every tree, bush, and interesting patch of ground deserves a thorough sniff. He is house-trained and does most of his business during his scheduled walks. Garbanzo can also be left loose in the house when his foster is away. He relaxes quietly and has not whined, caused trouble, or displayed destructive behavior. He rarely barks—even when the mail arrives or visitors come over. Deer spotted from the balcony, however, apparently deserve a strongly worded announcement. Smart, Snack-Driven, and Ready to Learn The fastest route to Garbanzo’s attention is through the crinkle of a treat bag. He is extremely food-motivated and will wake from even the deepest nap if he suspects snacks are being distributed. That enthusiasm makes him a wonderful training candidate. Garbanzo learned “sit” within just two or three days and should enjoy learning more with patient, positive reinforcement—and appropriate payment in treats. A Few Things to Know Garbanzo can become nervous around sudden or unfamiliar noises, including the vacuum, laundry machines, and the sound of a car engine starting. He may shake and seek reassurance, but he settles once he understands that he is safe. Interestingly, once the car is moving, Garbanzo is an excellent passenger. He relaxes in his car seat, does not appear to experience motion sickness, and often sleeps until he hears the parking brake. Like many of his breed, he appears to have some allergies and came to us with patchy and itchy skin. He is currently on a non-poultry diet and is healing up well, but his adopter should be prepared to address this with their veterinarian. Garbanzo’s Forever Home Garbanzo truly has the potential to be a “universal fit” dog. He could be happy with a family, a couple, or an individual; in a lively household or a quieter home; with another compatible dog or as the center of attention. He is mellow when life is calm, ready to join the fun when something is happening, and comfortable relaxing alone when his people are away. Garbanzo’s recipe is simple: regular walks, gentle reassurance, proper grooming, a cozy bed, and a generous supply of treats. Add plenty of love, and you’ll have one very happy little bean.
