* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 15th from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $800 Meet MapQuest, a sweet boy on a journey to find his forever home!   Looking for a companion who knows the fastest route to fun? MapQuest is a 1-2 year old, 16-pound Mini Schnauzer mix (maybe with some Dachshund in there!) with a non-shedding coat, a brilliant mind, and an adventurous spirit. Whether the destination is the neighborhood park, a grassy play area, or the sofa after dinner, this happy little navigator is always ready to lead the way. The Daily Route MapQuest is an early riser who starts his day around 6 a.m. He is completely housetrained and reliably does his business either in the backyard or while out on a walk—no wrong turns or accidents here!   Breakfast is served between 8 and 9 a.m., followed by a 20–30-minute walk around 10. MapQuest is an enthusiastic eater when the menu meets his standards, and he particularly enjoys freeze-dried and air-dried kibble. Once he decides he is full, however, he cannot be persuaded to eat another bite—unless you happen to offer a different kibble and call it a treat. Apparently, presentation is everything.   Another walk happens around 4 or 5 p.m., with dinner between 6 and 7. Afterward, MapQuest enjoys relaxing on the sofa with his people before heading out for one final walk around 9:30 p.m. At bedtime, he happily sleeps in the human bed alongside his foster family’s two dogs. He settles near everyone’s feet and sleeps peacefully through the night.   Smart, Brave, and Ready for Adventure   MapQuest is exceptionally intelligent. He learned his name almost immediately and has fantastic recall—often responding more reliably than his foster siblings! He is confident, curious, and eager to explore the world. New visitors are greeted with excited barks and an enthusiastically wagging tail, while returning family members may receive an adorable little cry of joy at the door.   This playful boy brings both sound and motion to the household. When he plays, he opens his mouth and makes the cutest little noises, as though he is narrating the entire adventure. His foster family says the house will feel far too quiet without him.   Dogs Are His Favorite Destination   If MapQuest were ranking his favorite things, other dogs would take first place, walks would come in second, and people would be a very close third. He lives with two young, energetic dogs weighing around 20 pounds, and all three coexist beautifully. They play, eat, relax, and sleep together.   MapQuest especially loves running and playing off-leash in a secure grassy area. He is fast, energetic, and seemingly tireless, making him a wonderful match for another playful dog. His foster siblings are going to miss him tremendously when he finds his forever home.   Walk This Way The mere suggestion of a walk is enough to make MapQuest’s day. He walks well on leash and would happily continue exploring for as long as his person is willing to go. When he spots another dog, his excitement may cause him to pull strongly because he desperately wants to say hello, but he does not bark at them.  At home, MapQuest is well behaved. He does not dig and is not much of a chewer. He may bark when someone approaches the house, when a squirrel is conducting suspicious business nearby, or during an especially exciting game with another dog. He also loves rolling around in the grass whenever the opportunity presents itself.   His Medical Journey MapQuest was rescued by DPS from a shelter and was found to need a femoral head ostectomy, commonly called an FHO, to improve his mobility and comfort. He underwent surgery and has been recovering beautifully in foster while completing physical therapy. MapQuest has now been medically cleared for adoption. He can run, play, and enjoy his beloved walks, but his future family should continue the recommended at-home physical therapy exercises to help him keep building strength and mobility. The exercises are very simple and he does not mind! Because MapQuest has a non-shedding coat, he will also need regular brushing and professional grooming to keep it healthy and free of mats.   MapQuest’s Forever Destination   MapQuest’s dream home would include a family that enjoys walks, playtime, and plenty of adventures. A playful resident dog would make his destination nearly perfect. He is comfortable when his people leave and has shown no signs of separation anxiety, so he does not require someone to be beside him every moment of the day.  Smart, brave, social, housetrained, and completely devoted to enjoying life, MapQuest is ready to calculate his final route: straight into the heart of his forever family.
