Description

Attention: This is a courtesy posting only! This pet is NOT available through Mountain Pet Rescue.  Please do NOT contact MPR for information about the pet or apply to adopt this pet on the MPR website.  Contact Caitlin at 678-997-6432 or Heather at 706-809-4050 for more information or to adopt the pet.Sammie is a neutered 7-year-old, 9-pound long-haired Chihuahua with so much love to give and a heartbreaking story to tell.In July, Sammie’s elderly owner, who was experiencing housing instability, was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Because her dogs were with her at the time, they were taken to a nearby rescue to wait for her to be able to pick them up. Unfortunately, Sammie escaped from a dog walker at the rescue and spent 19 days lost on the streets of Knoxville. He was eventually found and is now being fostered by family members in Asheville. Sadly, his owner is entering hospice care due to her illness, meaning Sammie has lost his person and the doggy sibling he had known his entire life. His sibling was recently adopted into a loving home, and now it is Sammie’s turn to find his forever family.Despite everything he has been through, Sammie is a happy, healthy boy who is ready for a fresh start. He has had a full veterinary exam and bloodwork, is up to date on vaccines, and is on monthly flea, tick and heartworm prevention. His last dental cleaning was in March 2026.Sammie has always lived with another dog and spent most of his life with cats. He currently lives with other dogs and a cat and does well with them, so we feel he would be happiest in a home with other animals. He has not been exposed to children, but we believe he could do well with older children who understand how to be gentle with a very small dog. After everything he has experienced, Sammie does have some separation anxiety and would love a home where someone is around much of the day. He is mostly housetrained but will need some continued consistency and reinforcement.Sammie loves car rides, belly rubs and napping in the sunshine. More than anything, he deserves a stable, loving home where he can finally feel safe and settled. In lieu of a traditional adoption fee, we are asking potential adopters to consider making a small donation to Mountain Pet Rescue, or the animal-related 501(c)(3) organization of their choice. Please contact Caitlin at 678-997-6432 or Heather at 706-809-4050 to learn more about Sammie!
