Meet Cookies, the adorable black brindle pug mix. Cookies came to the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She did show a little bit of wanderlust when left outside unattended – finding gaps in the fence or areas to escape from to go find fun of her own. Her previous guardians also observed she would “bolt” when the door was opened. Her next family should keep her safely indoors when unattended and on a leash or in a securely fenced in yard when with her to keep her from getting loose. Environmental management in the home such as being mindful of open doors will also help to keep her safe. Cookies previously lived in a home around felines and did okay. She also lived with children ages 6 and 10 years old. She is still working on her house training. At the Shelter, we have observed that Cookies has some dog selectivity. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption as well as have a slow, thoughtful introduction and management as they get to know each other after adoption. Cookies is available for pre-adoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them
