Description

Gunner’s story began with heartbreak. His previous owner left him chained to a shelter door and walked away. On top of that, this sweet boy needed entropion surgery. But if Gunner remembers any of that, he certainly doesn’t let it define him. Instead, he greets people with hope, kindness, and a wagging tail, as if he’s still convinced the very best is yet to come. And honestly, Gunner is the kind of dog who can probably get away with just about anything thanks to those irresistible puppy-dog eyes! He’s a young, happy-go-lucky goofball who loves to play, explore, and spend time outside. Give him the opportunity and he could happily spend the whole day enjoying the great outdoors.Like many hounds, Gunner has a mind of his own. He’s smart and very self-motivated, so traditional obedience training can be a bit of a negotiation with this guy. He may not always see the point in sitting just because you asked, but he absolutely can do it when he decides to cooperate! His adopter should be prepared to use patience, consistency, and plenty of positive reinforcement while helping him learn his manners.Gunner is wonderful with other dogs. He’s very respectful of their boundaries and does an excellent job matching their play style. Even with more high-strung dogs, he has a way of confidently holding his own without taking the fun out of play. He would likely enjoy having a canine companion, although he could potentially be happy as an only dog as well.He is beautifully crate trained and appears to be housebroken, making him a great candidate for life in a home. On walks, he has shown little interest in cats when encountering them, although resident-cat introductions should always be handled thoughtfully.Gunner is still very much a baby himself and can get a little too enthusiastic around food—he may try to steal snacks from little hands and could easily knock over a small child in his excitement. For that reason, a home with older children or adults would likely be the best fit.Gunner has been through more than he ever should have, yet he has somehow held onto his sweetness, silliness, and faith in people. He’s a straight-up goober who loves life, loves to play, and is ready for someone who will show him just how good life can be.They were rescued from a shelter in New Mexico.Meet and greets are by appointment only.  An approved application is required to schedule a meeting. Check out our events page for upcoming open adoption events! We have no additional back story or update for this dog at this time.  When we do, it will be updated here.  This is all the information we have currently. Approved Applicants may make the adoption fee payment by clicking donate above.  Partial adoption fees will not hold a dog. If upon meeting the dog of your choosing at your scheduled pickup time you find that you aren't a good match, your deposit will be fully refunded. Adoption fees include vaccines up until time of adoption, microchip, spay/neuter and 1st 30 days of free pet insurance.  We are not affiliated with MetLife pet insurance. (you have to sign up for the insurance or it will not go into effect).  Adoption fees help cover the medical care of the animals while he or she waits for a new home, as well as food and transportation costs. These fees help to provide care for the other animals in the shelter or rescue group who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee. The money also acts as a donation to help support the organization as a whole, allowing the group to continue its efforts to rescue and rehome pets. The dogs in our care are fostered in Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico.  While all dogs are picked up during our scheduled times, sometimes transport dates change due to unforeseen circumstances.   More questions?  Read our FAQs here: https://4p4l.org/faqs/  Breed labels are a "best guess" by a shelter veterinarian and cannot be guaranteed.
