* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 1st from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $750 Chai: The Sweetest Little Wallflower   If you've ever wished you could be the person who changes a dog's life forever, Chai may be the one you've been waiting for.   This darling 4-5 year old, 20-pound Poodle mix has a soft, non-shedding coat and the sweetest, most tender heart. She arrived at DPS Rescue with her friend Matcha after life had clearly taught her to be cautious. While she's still learning that the world is a safe place, every day she shows just a little more trust, and watching her blossom has been incredibly rewarding.   One of Chai's sweetest traits is how much she enjoys affection once she feels comfortable. She absolutely melts for gentle pets and tummy rubs, and her little tail starts wagging whenever she sees her foster or even hears a kind voice talking to her. She may not be the type to shadow you from room to room, but she's quietly happy just knowing you're nearby. Outside, if you start to walk away, she'll hurry after you and gently hop against the back of your legs as if to say, "Don't forget about me."   A Calm and Cozy Daily Routine   Chai is a low-energy girl who is happiest lounging in her cozy bed and quietly observing the world around her. At night she has free roam of the house, and every morning her foster discovers little treasures— socks or toys— that Chai has quietly gathered and carried back to her bed while everyone was asleep. It's one of her most endearing little habits.   Her day typically begins around 7:30 a.m. with a potty break. Because she's still nervous about leashes, her foster currently carries her outside before letting her explore in a secure harness. She's making steady progress and has even started running around a bit outside—something she wouldn't do when she first arrived.   Chai appears to have been trained to use potty pads and is very reliable using them indoors. She responds beautifully to positive reinforcement, praise, and treats, and every small success helps build her confidence.   From Fearful to Hopeful   When Chai first arrived, she was quite frightened. After only 2 weeks, she's a much happier little dog who greets her foster with tail wags, eagerly accepts affection, and continues making small but meaningful strides every day.   She isn't a cuddler just yet, although her foster has been gently encouraging her to sit on their lap, and she's slowly becoming more comfortable with close contact. Chai is proof that trust isn't given overnight— but once you earn it, it's incredibly special.   Friends Come in All Shapes and Sizes   Chai gets along wonderfully with other animals. She lives with three medium-to-large dogs and especially adores the resident American Bully, Gio. She has also spent time around many different dogs through her foster's dog daycare and has done very well. She is equally respectful and comfortable around cats, making her an excellent addition to a home with existing pets.   Children, however, are a different story. When her foster's 9- and 11-year-old nephews visited, Chai quietly chose to hide until they left. She is incredibly submissive and has never shown any aggression— in fact, if faced with a scary situation, she will always choose flight over fight.   Because of this, Chai will need a securely fenced yard, careful management when outdoors, and her adopters should plan to use a GPS collar or AirTag for added peace of mind while she continues building confidence.   Training and House Manners   Chai is wonderfully quiet— you may wonder if she even knows how to bark! She doesn't chew, dig, or get into mischief, is crate trained, and can be left home alone for a few hours without issue, especially if she has another furry friend for company.   Her leash skills are still very much a work in progress. A harness has helped tremendously, but she'll need an adopter who understands that confidence can't be rushed. Fortunately, Chai has already shown that with kindness, consistency, and patience, she is absolutely capable of making progress.   Her Perfect Home   Chai's ideal home is one filled with gentle, patient people who will let her move at her own pace. She would likely thrive with another friendly dog or even a cat to help her feel secure. A quieter home without young children would be the best fit, and while she seems especially comfortable around women, the most important thing is having adopters who will celebrate every little victory along the way.   Why You'll Love Chai   Dogs like Chai are truly special.
