Description

Meet Spike, the pitbull puppy! Spike is a young, spirited guy who is looking for a guardian to meet his day to day needs mentally and physically. He is perfecting sit and will need a patient adopter who will continue to work with him through positive reinforcement based training to learn other life skills and manners. Shelter staff have been observing that Spike can be mouthy. This means that while playing, he will sometimes put his teeth on people. Although this is a fairly normal behavior for puppies, it can lead to injury to people (puppies have sharp little teeth) if they are not redirecting puppies to toys or appropriate chew items. Spike has met a couple of dogs while in the Shelter’s care and has enjoyed playing with them. Another young, rowdy dog in the home to participate in playful antics with Spike will likely help him to grow into a good canine citizen and learn that puppy teeth are not for chomping on humans. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them
