Description

Meet Lucky, the tall, lanky scruffy Malamute mix! Lucky came to the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to meet his day to day needs. Lucky is an active, energetic dog. He has lived with children ages 9 and 13 years old as well as 2 cats. Lucky coexisted nicely with the two felines but did try to play with them. A home with dog-savvy cats is recommended as well as a slow, thoughtful introduction. Lucky can get a little mouthy when he is overstimulated. This means that while playing, he will sometimes put his teeth on people. Although this is a fairly normal behavior for puppies, it can lead to injury to people (puppies have sharp little teeth) if they are not redirecting puppies to toys or appropriate chew items. Adopters who meet Lucky’s mental and physical stimulation needs in the day to day through walks, positive reinforcement based training and play will likely see a decrease in his mouthing behavior. Lucky has not lived with dogs but may enjoy a canine companion after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. Lucky was described as house trained in his previous home. He sometimes chews on things when left alone unsupervised so adopters should puppy proof their home prior to bringing this XL pup home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them
