* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 1st from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $650 Sapphire's story is one of quiet courage. After spending three long months in a crowded Central Valley shelter, this gorgeous 10–12 month old, 30-pound Australian Cattle Dog mix is finally discovering what it means to feel safe. Every day, she takes another tiny step forward, and getting to watch her confidence bloom is nothing short of magical.   With her soft, fluffy coat, gentle eyes, and sweet soul, Sapphire isn't the kind of dog who rushes into your lap on day one. She's the kind of dog whose trust is earned—a nd once you have it, every tail wag, kiss, and brave new accomplishment feels like the biggest victory in the world.   Sapphire's Daily Routine   Sapphire starts her mornings around 6:30 a.m. with a trip to the backyard, where she happily explores, checks on the squirrels, and plays with her foster family's resident dog while breakfast is prepared. After eating around 7:00 a.m., she sneaks in another nap before heading out for her morning walk around 8:30.   The rest of the day is a wonderful balance of relaxing inside, lounging outdoors, keeping her foster family company while they garden, playing with her canine buddy, and soaking up the sunshine. Dinner is served around 7:00 p.m., followed by another walk before or after dinner depending on the weather. After one last potty break around midnight, Sapphire happily settles into her playpen for the night, where she sleeps peacefully.   A Gentle Soul Finding Her Confidence   When Sapphire first arrived, she was understandably overwhelmed. By her second day, little sparks of hope began to appear.   She started wagging her tail when her name was called. She cautiously approached for attention. She allowed gentle pets. Before long, she was even giving sweet little kisses.   Today, Sapphire still approaches the world carefully, but every single day she grows a little braver. She absolutely loves hearing her name and lights up when her people acknowledge her. She happily accepts pets once she feels safe. Watching her choose trust, little by little, is incredibly rewarding.   She's happiest outdoors but also loves simply being near her people and her canine friend. Sometimes she seems unsure whether she's truly allowed inside the house, making adorable little trips to the doorway before retreating again. With a little encouragement—and often the sight of her leash—she proudly follows her people inside.   Dogs Are Her Confidence Boosters   If Sapphire could choose her own life coach, it would definitely be another friendly dog.   Her foster family's 50-pound dog has become her role model, best friend, and confidence coach all rolled into one. Sapphire follows him everywhere, copies his interactions with people, enjoys playful chases around the yard, shares toys, and even teams up for squirrel patrol.   She has also greeted neighborhood dogs politely on walks and enjoys meeting other canine friends. Having a confident resident dog in her forever home would help Sapphire continue blossoming.   She has also done well around a teenage child.   Smart, Observant & Ready to Learn   For a young dog who's still building trust with humans, Sapphire has impressed everyone with how nicely she walks on leash. Once her leash is on, she happily follows along, enjoying opportunities to sniff the world around her and meet other dogs.   Like many young pups, squirrels are simply too exciting to ignore, and she occasionally forgets her manners when one darts by. Loud noises and sudden movements can still startle her, but she bravely keeps going— especially when her dog friend is by her side.   Inside the home, Sapphire is quiet and well-mannered. She rarely barks, appears to understand that potty happens outside, and has had no true accidents indoors.   She's also a bright youngster who occasionally experiments with chewing things; with gentle redirection, she's quickly learned what belongs to her and what doesn't.   Her Perfect Forever Home   Sapphire is looking for a patient family that understands shy dogs and will let her move at her own pace. She doesn't need someone to rush her progress—she simply needs people who will celebrate every tiny victory along the way.   Her ideal home would include:   A friendly, confident resident dog to continue showing her the ropes. A calm family willing to give her time, patience, and space to blossom. Older, respectful children or an adult home. A family that enjoys outdoor adventures like hiking, camping, and nature walks once her confidence continues to grow.   Why You'll Fall in Love   Some dogs make an impression the moment you meet them.   Sapphire is different.   She's the kind of dog who quietly works her way into your heart.
