* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 1st from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $750 Meet Bratwurst!   If you're searching for a dog whose greatest ambition in life is to collect belly rubs, accompany you on leisurely adventures, and then snooze happily by your side, Bratwurst is ready to make your dreams come true.   This adorable 1-2 year old, 23-pound Dachshund marched into the DPS Safehouse straight from a Central Valley shelter with the confidence of someone who knew he'd finally found his people. Volunteers started calling him the Mayor of DPS because he would greet everyone who entered with thumping tail wags and little kisses! He immediately made himself at home, introduced himself to everyone he met, and hasn't stopped charming volunteers ever since. Friendly, affectionate, and wonderfully easygoing, Bratwurst has the kind of personality that makes people fall in love within minutes.   A Day in the Life   Bratwurst enjoys a relaxed routine that's the perfect balance of adventure and lounging. His mornings usually begin around 8:00 a.m. with a walk, where his little legs move surprisingly fast! He absolutely loves exploring the neighborhood, sniffing every interesting scent, investigating every bush, and taking in the world around him.   After his morning outing, breakfast is served around 10:00 a.m. He enjoys two meals a day totaling about 1 to 1½ cups of kibble, and he'll never say no to the occasional piece of string cheese as a special treat.   During the day, Bratwurst has the best of both worlds. He spends time roaming a secure fenced backyard, happily sniffing flowers and fruit trees, then wanders into the cool, shaded garage whenever he's ready for a nap. Like any true Dachshund, he's an expert at finding the coziest spot to relax while keeping an eye (and ear) on his people.   Evenings include another delicious dinner around 6:00 p.m. followed by one last walk after dinner. At bedtime, Bratwurst settles comfortably into his x-pen for the night and sleeps peacefully.   Sweet, Calm, and Full of Personality   Bratwurst may just be one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. His signature move? The moment he notices you're paying attention, he enthusiastically wags his tail, flops onto his back, and proudly presents his belly for rubs. He even makes the cutest little grunting noises to let you know just how happy he is.   While he loves affection, he's not clingy. He's perfectly content relaxing nearby while you go about your day, often choosing a soft rug where he can quietly watch his family. He's calm in the house, wonderfully low-maintenance, and happy to nap for much of the afternoon.   Outside, though, his adventurous side shines. He transforms into a determined little explorer, marching confidently down the sidewalk with plenty of enthusiasm. He enjoys greeting other dogs, politely sniffing new people, and investigating every interesting smell he can find.   One of his foster family's favorite things is catching him asleep on top of their shoes— or even hugging a house slipper during his naps!   Social Butterfly   Bratwurst is friendly with everyone he meets. He's enjoyed meeting many dogs during neighborhood walks and at the park, greeting them with calm curiosity and polite interest. While he would likely enjoy having a canine companion, he has also shown that he's perfectly happy being the only dog in the home.   He's also been wonderful around children. He happily allowed a young child to pet him for several minutes, though he's generally more interested in exploring the world around him than being the center of attention.   House Manners   Bratwurst is as polite indoors as he is lovable. He's housetrained and keeps his crate and x-pen impeccably clean, always waiting to potty outside or during walks. He has never chewed household items, has caused zero destruction, and shows no interest in escaping from his pen.   When left home alone, he calmly enjoys access to the garage and backyard and shows no signs of separation anxiety.   On walks, he does like to walk with purpose and may pull a bit on leash— not excessively, but enough to remind you that he has places to sniff! Thankfully, he's a quiet walking companion who doesn't bark at people or other dogs.     His Perfect Home   Bratwurst would thrive with a family who appreciates both his affectionate side and his independent spirit. He's happiest with a soft place to lounge where he can keep an eye on his favorite people, plenty of belly rubs whenever he asks (which is often!), and a family that enjoys his calm, gentle companionship. He isn't particularly interested in toys or games of fetch— his love language is quality time and affection.   Why You'll Love Bratwurst   Bratwurst is truly one of those rare dogs who effortlessly fits into everyday life.
