* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 1st from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $650 Meet Plaid!   Plaid is proof that sometimes the sweetest dogs just need a little time to feel safe. This adorable 3-4 year old, 12-pound Jack Russell Terrier mix came to us from the shelter, where he was found alongside another dog. While the shelter was a scary place for this sensitive little guy, once he realized he was finally safe, his playful, affectionate personality began to shine.   Today, Plaid is equal parts athlete, cuddle bug, and goofball. Whether he's proudly carrying his favorite squeaky toy from room to room or dropping a ball at your feet for "just one more throw," he's guaranteed to keep a smile on your face.   A Day in the Life   Plaid enjoys a routine filled with the perfect balance of activity and relaxation. His mornings begin around 9:00 a.m. with a potty break followed by one of his favorite activities— soaking up the sunshine. He loves lounging in the yard alongside his foster family's two resident dogs, happily watching the neighborhood go by. If a delivery truck or passerby appears, he'll proudly announce their arrival with the rest of the pack before heading back inside for breakfast and a treat.   He's not always hungry first thing in the morning, though. Sometimes he'd rather follow his foster around the house, play with his toys, or curl up in his cozy dog bed inside his soft play pen. Having his own little "room" gives him a comforting place to relax whenever he wants some quiet time.   One of Plaid's absolute favorite parts of the day is a game of fetch. His foster often spends 20 to 30 minutes throwing his beloved squeaky ball, and Plaid could happily keep playing far longer if you let him. He has impressive stamina for such a little guy and absolutely lights up when it's playtime.   Throughout the day, Plaid enjoys enrichment activities like snuffle mats, lick mats, treats, short indoor play sessions, and plenty of lounging nearby. Around 5:00 p.m., he heads out for a leisurely hour-long walk through the neighborhood and local park before coming home ready for dinner— which is when his appetite really kicks in.   Evenings are for relaxing. Plaid alternates between stretching out in his dog bed and climbing onto the couch for cuddle time. When you stop petting him, don't be surprised if he gently paws your hand to politely request that the massage continue!   At bedtime, Plaid sleeps peacefully in his own gated room with a comfy dog bed, crate, and pee pads available, although lately he's decided the dog bed is much cozier than the crate. He's also perfectly happy sleeping in his soft pen beside his people.   From Timid to Toy Enthusiast   When Plaid first arrived, he was understandably frightened. Even slow movements would send him running back into his crate, which quickly became his safe place.   Then something wonderful happened.   His foster discovered that squeaky toys were the key to his heart.   At first, Plaid would cautiously chase the toy, grab it, and run back to his crate with it. A few moments later, he'd peek out and quietly bring it back because he wanted to keep playing— even though he was still building confidence.   By the end of the first week, his personality had completely started to blossom.   Today, Plaid is playful, affectionate, and endlessly entertaining. He loves carrying his favorite stuffed toy or squeaky ball absolutely everywhere. His foster lovingly calls it his "emotional support toy" because it accompanies him from room to room— and yes, he's even been spotted carrying it outside during potty breaks!   One of his funniest habits is his version of fetch. He'll enthusiastically chase the ball, disappear into his room with it for a minute, making you think the game is over, then suddenly reappear, toy in mouth, ready to start all over again.   Great With Other Dogs   Plaid currently lives with two small resident dogs and has adjusted beautifully with thoughtful introductions. While he was initially unsure, he quickly learned to become part of the pack and now enjoys following his confident Chihuahua foster sibling around the house and yard. She has even inspired him to head outside when he'd rather stay cozy in bed. He also spent an overnight foster with our resident Pibble girl, Sunny D, and they were instant BFFs, proving he's good with dogs of all sizes.   He would likely do very well with another friendly, well-adjusted dog who could help him continue building confidence, though he could also thrive as an only dog with an attentive family.   Plaid has also met respectful children, including a toddler and a 12-year-old. He did well when introductions were calm and centered around playing fetch rather than overwhelming attention. Because he's naturally a bit shy, he'd do best with gentle, dog-savvy children who understand that friendships sometimes take a little time.   Active but Easygoing   Plaid has a wonderful balance of energy. He absolutely loves to play, fetch, and go on walks, but once he's had his exercise, he settles beautifully into relaxation mode.   His evening walks are a highlight of his day. He walks wonderfully on leash without pulling, stays close to his person, and ignores people and other dogs along the way. Squirrels definitely catch his attention, and neighborhood cats are fascinating to watch, but he's been content simply observing them.   House Manners   Plaid is mostly housetrained and does an excellent job going potty outside. If he does need to potty indoors, he naturally seeks out pee pads.   He isn't destructive around the house and quickly learned that durable toys are much more fun than soft plush ones. He doesn't dig and only barks when someone approaches the house or during an especially exciting play session.   When left home alone, Plaid is happiest when he can remain near other dogs. His foster noticed he became much more relaxed when resting in his soft pen in the living room alongside his canine friends rather than being isolated in another room.   His Perfect Home   Plaid is looking for a family that understands shy dogs often become the most rewarding companions. He'd love an active home where he can enjoy daily walks, games of fetch, and plenty of quality time with his people.   A friendly resident dog would be a wonderful bonus, as Plaid enjoys being part of a pack and gains confidence from watching another dog navigate the world. Most importantly, he needs a family willing to give him a little grace during those first days while he settles in. Once he realizes he's safe, his joyful, silly personality comes shining through.   Why You'll Love Plaid   Plaid is wonderfully quirky in all the best ways. He doesn't ask for fancy treats or lavish attention—he's happiest with a squeaky ball, a comfy bed, and people who include him in their daily lives.   He's playful without being overwhelming, affectionate without being clingy, and endlessly charming with his habit of carrying his beloved toy everywhere he goes.
