    This dog is available to meet by appointment only. Gretchen is a sweet, sensitive 2-year-old terrier mix who is discovering just how wonderful life can be. Gretchen came to the shelter from a challenging situation where she had limited opportunities to experience the world and build trusting relationships with people. When she first arrived, she was understandably unsure and reserved. But with time, patience, and lots of encouragement, she has been making steady progress—and we’re getting to see more and more of the wonderful dog she is. Gretchen has become much more comfortable with the people she knows. As she has gotten to know the shelter volunteers, she has begun to seek them out, enjoy their attention, and show more of her sweet personality. She has learned that familiar people are friends, and the trust she has developed with them has been wonderful to see. She may still be cautious with new people, but once she gets to know you, you can see her relax and let you into her world.   Her ideal adopter will have experience working with shy or under-socialized dogs and understand that trust takes time. They should be willing to let Gretchen set the pace as she adjusts to a new home, with a predictable routine, patience, and plenty of gentle encouragement. We believe she can continue building confidence and discovering all that life has to offer.   There is something especially rewarding about earning the trust of a shy dog—and Gretchen is ready for someone who will appreciate that journey.
