Description
Butter has never known the life most dogs take for granted. She arrived at the shelter as a stray alongside her sister, likely having never lived in a home or experienced the kindness of people. Terrified and completely shut down, Butter was quickly running out of time. In an overcrowded shelter, staff simply didn't have the resources to give a dog as fearful as Butter the specialized care she needed, and she was facing euthanasia before she ever had the chance to learn what it meant to just be a dog. Thankfully, Libby and Mace's Place stepped in and changed her story. Since coming into foster care, Butter has made incredible progress. While she still has a long journey ahead of her, she now knows the joy of playing with her canine foster sibling, has learned that gentle pets from her foster mom are something to enjoy, and has discovered what may be her favorite pastime of all: spending the day snoring away on the couch. Butter isn't your typical dog, and she needs an adopter who will love her for exactly who she is. She is still very afraid of people, especially when they're standing or walking around. She'll often slink past with her head low or hurry away if approached too quickly. Trust isn't something that comes naturally to Butter—it's something that's earned through patience, consistency, and allowing her to move at her own pace. Because her foster mom lives in an apartment, Butter has not yet learned to walk on a leash or go potty outside. She currently uses washable pee pads indoors. We absolutely believe she can continue making progress with the right environment, but she's simply not there yet. Her ideal home will have a secure 6-foot privacy fence where she can safely explore and build confidence at her own speed. She's also surprisingly athletic and has easily cleared baby gates in foster care, so secure containment is a must. Butter does wonderfully with other dogs once she's comfortable. She has successfully integrated with both male and female dogs, though she needs slow, respectful introductions. It's not uncommon for her to growl or bare her teeth initially when she's scared, but given space and time, she has consistently learned to trust and become wonderful companions with the dogs she's met. A confident, friendly resident dog would likely help Butter continue to blossom. The people lucky enough to earn Butter's trust get to see the dog hiding beneath all that fear: a gentle, affectionate girl who loves soft pets, cozy naps, and simply being near the people she feels safe with. Butter isn't looking for someone to "fix" her. She's looking for someone who understands that healing isn't measured in days or weeks, but in tiny victories—a nap a little closer to you, a tail wag that comes a little sooner, a moment of bravery that would go unnoticed by anyone who didn't know how far she's come. If you have the patience to let Butter write the rest of her story at her own pace, you'll gain the privilege of watching a dog discover, one day at a time, that the world isn't such a scary place after all. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, prevention and dewormed. She is heartworm positive but being treated using the Advantage Multi method. We will continue to provide her doses until she tests negative. Her adoption fee is $350.
