Born on 4/4/26, Papaya is a 3 month old Husky mix with a big personality, an even bigger heart, and the cutest belly-up greeting you've ever seen. Walk past him and chances are he'll already be rolling over, patiently waiting for a belly rub. He's one of those puppies who genuinely loves people and wants to be part of whatever you're doing. Papaya's journey with DPS got off to a rocky start. Shortly after arriving in rescue, he fractured his leg and had to spend several weeks recovering in foster care instead of enjoying a carefree puppyhood. The good news? He's healed beautifully, has been given a clean bill of health by our veterinarian, and is finally ready to start the fun part of his story— finding his forever family. A Typical Day Like most puppies, Papaya thrives on routine. His days are filled with potty breaks every few hours, short training sessions, backyard adventures, meals served in sniff mats, enrichment games, playtime, and plenty of naps in between. After about 30 minutes of playing, exploring, and investigating the world, he's more than happy to curl up for a well-earned snooze. When his foster is working, Papaya happily entertains himself with toys and a comfy bed in the living room. He's wonderfully independent for such a young puppy and only lets you know if you're running late for a potty break— or if his water bowl happens to be empty! Personality Papaya is everything you could want in a puppy: curious, goofy, affectionate, and incredibly smart. The world is one giant adventure to him. Every stick deserves inspection, every flowerpot is fascinating, and every new smell must be investigated. He loves to cuddle, especially after he's burned off some puppy energy, and he's always happy to soak up affection. While he enjoys being around people, he's not a velcro puppy. He's perfectly content relaxing in his exercise pen while his people are busy or away for a few hours, making him a nice balance of affectionate and independent. One of his favorite things is simply flopping over for belly rubs whenever someone walks by. Training & Potty Skills Papaya is already showing just how bright he is. He knows "sit," "bed," and "with me," and he's making great progress learning "wait" before meals. He loves food puzzles, sniff mats, lick toys, and enrichment activities, which make training both fun and rewarding. He's about 90% potty trained and has done an excellent job sticking to his schedule. He'll sometimes get distracted by all the exciting things outside, but a gentle reminder to "go potty" gets him back on task. He's pen-trained, sleeps quietly through the night in his pen, and settles nicely without whining, even when he's sleeping in a different room from his foster. Other Dogs Papaya has met larger adult dogs and has done wonderfully. He naturally wants to play but has shown impressive respect for older dogs who aren't interested. He's appropriately curious, social, and polite, making him a great candidate for a home with another friendly dog. Typical Puppy Things Like any young puppy, Papaya is teething and enjoys chewing on appropriate toys and sticks. He occasionally gets mouthy when he's overly excited during play, but he redirects easily with a chew toy and responds well to gentle reminders. He's also recently discovered the joy of digging— but fortunately, he's easy to redirect with a simple verbal cue. He's eager to learn and genuinely wants to please. Since he's still completing his puppy vaccinations, he hasn't started neighborhood walks yet. He's currently practicing leash skills at home and is learning that the leash isn't actually another chew toy. Ideal Home Papaya is looking for a family excited to invest in puppy training and enrichment. He's incredibly food motivated, eager to learn, and thrives when given structure and positive guidance. Whether you're tossing a ball (he's still working on bringing it back), playing tug, hiding treats for him to sniff out, or simply giving him belly rubs, Papaya is happiest spending time with his people. If you're looking for a smart, affectionate, playful puppy who has already overcome one big hurdle in life and is ready to make up for lost time, Papaya is waiting to meet you.
