Description

OTHER PETS: Velvet didn't show much interest in greeting or playing with other dogs, but she was relaxed around them. She would likely do well in a home with another relaxed, well socialized dog. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)]OWNER EXPERIENCE: While Velvet is an easy-going, fairly independent dog, she has been found to have some renal issues and will do best with someone that has an established relationship with a vet. [First Dog]KIDS: Velvet is a fairly calm and laid-back dog, and hasn't shown any signs of resource guarding while at TJO, but as an older dog may not appreciate rough handling or an unpredictable environment. She would likely do best with kids that are able to understand how to interact with her appropriately, and when to let her have her space. Children should always be actively supervised during dog-child interactions to be sure everyone is safe and comfortable. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)]ACTIVITY LEVEL: Velvet hasn't been much of a lap dog during her stay at TJO, but she's just as happy to sit in the sun and settle next to her favorite people while she's outside. She greatly enjoys sniffing around during her walks to catch up on the morning's news, and is looking forward to exploring a whole new environment with her new people. A combination of regular exercise and mental enrichment such as food puzzles, scent games, and playtime will help meet her needs. [Couch Potato]VETERINARY CARE: With Velvet being an older dog, she will likely need more frequent vet appointments to ensure that she continues to age gracefully. She has also been found to have some renal issues, and will need to be fed a prescription food, along with yearly bloodwork to manage her kidney levels. [Above Average]LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Velvet not only learn new skills and fun tricks, but also help her to bond with her new owner. [Minimal]GROOMING: Due to Velvet's coat type and texture, she will need to be brushed routinely in order to prevent her fur from becoming matted. She could also do well with scheduled appointments with a professional groomer to keep her fur neat and comfortable. [Routine Brushing]
