Description

DAFFODIL (A1407352) has been placed on final on 06/03/26.Daffodil must be pulled prior to 5:00 PM on 06/06/26 or she will be humanely euthanized.Summary of Behavior:Daffodil presents with a notable and rapid escalation in behavioral responses during her shelter stay, shifting from an initially social, playful, and highly interactive dog in out-of-kennel settings to a severely over-aroused and unsafe presentation in the kennel environment and during handling. Early observations documented a dog who was wiggly, socially engaged, and highly play-motivated, showing loose body language, quick responsiveness to handlers, strong interest in interaction, and appropriate play behavior with other dogs when introduced. She was able to leash easily, came when called, and demonstrated social flexibility in playgroup-style interactions, including reciprocal play and the ability to engage and disengage during high-energy play.As her time in the shelter progressed, Daffodil began to show increasing kennel-based frustration and barrier-driven arousal, including charging the kennel door, barking, jumping, and body-slamming at the front of the enclosure during staff approach. This escalation has continued into out-of-kennel handling contexts, where she now demonstrates intense forward movement toward exits, difficulty maintaining impulse control once leashed, and escalating redirection toward handlers when movement is restricted or when additional staff are present. When aroused, she exhibits repeated attempts to bite at hands and handling tools, as well as persistent jumping and thrashing behaviors when blocked or guided back toward the kennel.Attempts at redirection using food or handling tools have been largely ineffective once Daffodil is in a high-arousal state, as she remains focused on movement, barrier pressure, and access to space rather than engagement with handlers. While she previously demonstrated strong social engagement and play drive in lower-stress environments, this capacity is no longer consistently accessible within the current kennel setting due to her rapidly escalating arousal thresholds.Despite earlier sociable and playful behavior, Daffodil is now demonstrating severe kennel-induced frustration, high arousal reactivity, and significant handling safety concerns that have developed over a short timeframe in care. This represents a marked behavioral shift from her initial presentation and suggests a significant deterioration in stress regulation within the shelter environment.Overall, Daffodil is currently demonstrating severe kennel frustration, escalating arousal-based reactivity, and significant handling risk behaviors, with a marked decline in behavioral stability compared to initial intake observations. Overall Risk Assessment Matrix:Likelihood: Almost Certain | Consequence: Considerable | Overall Risk: ExtremeACS at Risk Process: R4Path Forward: Rescue or adopter must commit and pull Daffodil by 5 PM on 06/06/2026, or Daffodil will be humanely euthanized. Rescue or adopter will also need to have a waiver signed and submitted prior to leaving with the dog.DAFFODIL IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR FOSTER. ADOPTION OR RESCUE ONLYEXTENSION REQUEST PROCESS:A Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal’s Needs Rescue Final Date no later than 10:00 a.m. on the noted ‘final date’ via email to the SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor.Extension requests must be from the RG interested in the animal, include specific information as to delays in rescue commitment, specific care arrangements, or other time-based mitigating factors that warrant an extension.
